Re: Slow Downloads Using Firefox or IE

start/run then type cmd

when the dos box appears type.....

tracert www.bbc.co.uk > C:\tracert.txt

Then go to my computer and look on the C drive for the file tracert.txt and copy and paste the results.

As for the mac address, I'm sure its built into the modem I recall reading somewhere. Someone else might be able to clarify this.

Re: Slow Downloads Using Firefox or IE

Looks like you have some serious packet loss there mate.

I think a call to CS is required, tell them the results of the traceroute. Its timing out on some hops.

Just noticed the first hop on the first set of results, 1751 ms thats just under 2 seconds to get a response from the router.

Did you try to connect the modem, without the router ?

Then try another traceroute.

Re: Slow Downloads Using Firefox or IE

Connect PC direct to modem, and as I get is timed out '
1 6 ms 2 ms 2 ms 192.168.2.1 2 * * * Request timed out.' & page not found.

Realised, I actually have 2 routers between PC & Modem, so have by-passed 1, and still get the following:

Turn everything off. unplug the modems power and the routers power.

Turn back on in the following order.

Power up the modem, leave it to settle (about a minute should be ok).

Then power up the router, again for about a minute, until the lights settle on that.

Then boot up the pc.

Failing all that, I can't really think of too much else at the moment, so a call to customer service will be needed.

Yes - but pc does not load any pages - and trace route times out (presume different mac address).

OK, going to trun off all as in pedantics note.

See you in about 5 mins!

Re: Slow Downloads Using Firefox or IE

OK - firstly now all bits back up and running - and speed does seem to have come back - but here is a trace route [edit - on 2nd thoughts, perhaps not that quick]

Tracing route to www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.227.78] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 6 ms 2 ms 2 ms 192.168.2.1
2 12 ms 9 ms 24 ms 10.7.128.1
3 9 ms 17 ms 9 ms herm-t2cam1-b-v106.inet.ntl.com [80.3.34.133]
4 8 ms 9 ms 10 ms herm-t2core-b-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com [80.3.33.133]
5 11 ms 43 ms 27 ms pop-bb-b-so-620-0.inet.ntl.com
[62.253.187.21]
6 12 ms 12 ms 11 ms gfd-bb-a-so-500-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.137]
7 13 ms 11 ms 11 ms gfd-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.6]
8 39 ms 15 ms 13 ms redb-ic-1-as0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.174.138]
9 135 ms 213 ms 218 ms 212.58.238.189
10 14 ms 13 ms 12 ms 212.58.238.133
11 14 ms 12 ms 13 ms 212.58.238.141
12 12 ms 22 ms 11 ms www8.rbsov.bbc.co.uk [212.58.227.78]

Trace complete.

As for the 2 routers (just to satisfy the curious).
When I moved into my new house, I had a router (inc wireless) installed (under the stairs) next to the modem, with 2 outlet going upstairs (1 bedroom, 1 spare room) & 1 to the main area for the pc. As all floorboards were up etc, seemed good idea to hide all the wires, and have proper ethernet sockets installed (thanks to a very nice NTL engineer). However, I now have 2 pc's in my 'pc area' plus my daughters pc, so installed another router for the single outlet. Hence 2 routers.

Re: Slow Downloads Using Firefox or IE

That seems a lot better.

I'm not sure whats going on at hop 9 though.

Sunday night is always a bit of a bugger though, keep an eye on things and see how you get on. Try traceroutes at different times of the day, it could be a congestion thing.

If things get bad, a call to CS may well uncover a fault.

I've tried various sites. Micro$oft, ntl (from webspace), PSP websites etc but it's the same everywhere, but using the download program mentioned in another post, the download speed is fine could it be anything to do with me needing to tweek the MTU or any other network/internet settings?

Run the test from the link I gave in post #2 then from the results page, copy and paste from the address bar in your browser back to here.

You can tell from that test what your MTU and RWIN values are.

Personally, I would download this (get the latest one)

There is a good site here for calculating Rwin values.

I would try.......

Rwin 64240 and MTU 1500

Make sure your adapter is being displayed, and apply the settings. No need to set anything else. Then reboot.
