Re: College Coursework.
I have just started my web design unit at college, but im finding things a little difficult at the mo with it (they are making us code HTML in Notepad) which i suppose is ok, because it gets us actually learning all the different codes. Can i depend on CF if i need help on this?

They're letting you use Notepad? We weren't allowed, which really annoyed me, i wanted to learn it all properly, and make sure my practices were actually common.
However we were forced to use Dreamweaver... What a farce... Nice software, but we didn't exactly learn much.

I'll help where possible... I run 2x Celebrity websites & a few other sites too
I use Front Page 2000 (never liked Dream/W) & I edit most code in WebNotePad (awesome Tool)

Re: HTML Help!
I thought front page mangles sites in different browsers, or did i just read something wrong somewhere...
And since it's a new thread, i answer, yes you most likely can rely on CF

Re: HTML Help!
Well the thing that ive stumbled across is tables. I have two things which i would like to put into a table. Text in one column and pictures in the other. But the thing is, im finding it hard to create this table, and then i have to try and put the text and images where i want them.

The important thing is for you to try & work it out for yourself, first, and only ask for help when you are truly stuck.
I'll be no good, though - my level of competence is 'save as html' from Word

Which makes the most ugly code you'll ever see... haha.
Also ,if we don't reply fast enough for ya, google helps me a lot with things, so, even if you are at college and we don't reply you have unlimited resources at your fingertips

you are not wrong, there
- but doing that, or looking at the source code for a webpage, can often give hints & ideas for basic things, then the challenge is to streamline it/alter it for your particular purpose.

Good point, we were recommended Word to develop webpages for our assignments at college... Many many people came unstuck when it came to cross borwser compatability. However, the ones who used other means, for example notepad or dreamweaver, or a mixture seemed to come out top

Just to reiterate this point, the best way to solve a problem as a programmer is to try and try again, and not just ask for help at the first hurdle. You don't really learn anything by just copying and pasting someone else's solution, whereas even if what you try to do yourself doesn't work first time, at least you'll be learning from your mistakes, which in programming at least, is as important as learning from your successes.
As a code monkey, I used to get as much out of understanding why something wouldn't work as I had wanted it to when I'd got something wrong as I did in understanding why things worked the way they did. To be a real code monkey, you need to be inquisitive... about stuff that doesn't work as well as stuff that does.
And if all that fails, then just sit next to the smartest kid in your class.

edit: In fact, thinking about this a bit more, I'm more than prepared to help you with your HTML provided you give me the name of your college and your tutor beforehand

Re: HTML Help!
If you can get hold of Macromedia Dreamweaver, it has two tabs so it shows the pagelayout as HTML so you can write and see how it looks in HTML code, and then also shows the page in full view (WYSIWYG).
It's good for writing code and then seeing instantly how it looks.

I am willing to advise you on this if you are having problems I actually enjoyed using notepad to build a website. It also helps if you upload what you have done and explain what you aretrying to do then we can offer some constructive advice.
