While i wish it didnt happen, they had a choice between no google or google. They at least will tell when something has been censored and will not offer email cos of what yahoo did

Hey now, supporting opression and trampling over the human rights of over a billion people is something to be proud of.
I'm actually kinda torn on this. Google are a private company, they can do what the hell they like legally and I support that.... but its not really a decent, ethical nor moral thing to do.
It is peverse though. Google was co-founded by a Russian Jew. You'd think state oppression and censorship was something he'd be touchy about supporting.

Yeah, complying is mandatory and supporting is voluntary. They are going into China vountarily, mainly because of money.

Actually, I agree. As a private company, Google do have the right to do what they want (as long as it's legal). It's just I don't see how a company that was apparently set up to enable people to find information easily can justify censoring info to keep a government happy.

I can see why... I just don't like it. Comes down to the all-mighty dollar (or in this case, the all-mighty yuan).
Google aren't short of a few bob. I think they could take the high ground, gain respect for it, and still manage to keep the wolves from the door.

I dont think this is about the money now. I think they would prefere sticking up to China like you say but this is about the future. Google could be toppled if they missed out on such a large market.

Re: China- Freedom of speech is <mod edit: Censored>
Pepoe seem to be missing the point that china can block access to google completly.
What google have done is complied with the chinese request in order to provide a limited service.
The US is all freedom of speech and as such cannot impose such restrictions on google. I'm sure if google had its way it would want a 100% unrestricted service in china.

Re: China- Freedom of speech is <mod edit: Censored>
I think this isnt really a big issue. Everyone is waiting for Google to become what it always says it is not. This isnt it.
The truth is not that Google was free of use then they decide to add censorship. It was already being blocked though filters via The Great Firewall of China. This meant Google was going very slow and still had censorship.
Now, it still has censorship but it tells the user when it happens and it runs a lot faster
