Help please! Problems accessing a website?

Hi all,

I hope someone here can help me? Yesterday I was accessing a website when the internet connection dropped. When it reconnected I couldn't access the site again. I checked my anti-virus software and blocked sites etc to see if it had become added to the list somehow, but no joy.

Oh, before anyone gets suspicious, it's not an "adult" site... it's the BBC!

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help please! Problems accessing a website?

What site link are you using and what is coming up in your browser? What browser is it and what firewalls etc do you run? Are you specifying a proxy?
Just a few blanks to fill in lol.

OK, from a non-technical person to a technical one...

I am using BBC.CO.UK via Internet Explorer. I have McAffee anti-virus stuff, with firewall etc, and also have the Windows XP firewall.

Hope that makes it easier to fix!

Re: Help please! Problems accessing a website?

When you click on http://www.bbc.co.uk/ what happens? Does IE try to open the page and then give an error?
In IE click tools, internet options, connections, lan settings. Are there any ticks in any boxes there?
Why are you running two firewalls by the way???

It takes an age then opens up a page from "My Web Search"? This seems to be just a search engine, which I never use by the way.

I I installed McAffee and it includes a firewall, and I think I disabled the XP firewall anyway!

I checked the settings, and no boxes were checked.

Re: Help please! Problems accessing a website?

You have spyware/ malware installed and it's causing problems with the browser.
Time to do some cleeaning
http://www.pchell.com/support/mywebsearch.shtml
Try following the instructions and then run adaware, spybot S&D, adaware and then a full virus scan. Please run them all as they will probably pick up other things. Make sure your definitions for each program are up to date before running them though.
There are links here to a lot of the tools you will need to download and run.

Thanks for the advice. As a short-term fix I ran the AOL Spyware program and it seems to have worked. I will follow your advice when I have more time, probably this weekend. Thanks again.
