AOL Broadband

If you have a AOL broadband account and your out of contract IE you have completed your year contract don't think you can cancel your account if you have downgraded or upgraded after the year is up,they will tell you you can't cancel as you have signed up for a further year and you will have to buy your contract out.

sounds like sharp practice to me. If they didn't tell you this when you upgraded / downgraded, then legally they will have no ability to enforce this.

AOL are dodgy when it comes to billing, I tried to scam using my debit card got free month and cancelled. Then I got billed anyway. Accepted it then 4 months later got billed again which they said was error, told me to contact bank etc. to authorise chargeback as they wouldnt just do it. Rang bank for chargeback "oh no sir we have good relationship with AOL they dont do bad things like that ask them to approve it" rang AOL "you need to fax signed statement showing the debit", I did this and in the end still didnt get my money back as had no proof of cancellation so ended up changing my card number to block further payments.

Yeh i would agree with you in my case they reduced my AOL gold account
from £24.99 to £19.99 but would not move on the if youv'e changed your package you have signed up for a further 12 months.
After spending some time going through the terms of AOL broadband i could find nothing about having to stay on for a further 12 months because you have changed your package,when asked about this i was told the info comes up when you log on for the first time after you have changed package i can't see this standng up in law.
I will buy my contract out in 3 months or so but can't help feeling i've been ripped off,i will never go back to AOL again i've been with them for 4 years now.
