Internet access at Universities?

My step-daughter is due to attend Brighton Uni late September and I wondered what kind of internet access is available at Unis nowadays? Do they all have big wireless networks available that she can access via her lappy? Anyone here know what the score is?
Cheers.

Re: Internet access at Universities?

varies from uni to uni i think. here at birmingham the entire campus is wireless-enabled, and the halls of residence all have 100mbit connections...

Re: Internet access at Universities?

in Swansea most of the halls (excluding the new blocks which have 100mb) use the ntl university phone system- calls are with an access number and done by top-up card and calling in is an 0870 number. For internet they only offer dial up which is pay per minute and comes from the top-up card.

However, in the library there is wifi access available to the uni network, but obviously the use of this is limited (eg no p2p software )

we saturated the network here at birmingham with a internal dc++ hub when i was in halls... oops...

p2p is now banned and they have super heavy-duty packet shaping...

if you want any info about the birmingham stuff go to: http://www.is.bham.ac.uk , http://wireless.bham.ac.uk and http://www.damovoconnect.com

Re: Internet access at Universities?

Most universities have options for students to connect to the uni's very fast Internet access and this is normally explained when you get a room in the uni accomodation.
Some charge a flat fee extra, others are included as standard.

Re: Internet access at Universities?

Was 70 smackers for a year's termtime lan wired connection at ours- every room was cabled. I'd imagine the facility would exist at most unis. Give them a ring- might occupy their small minds in the vacation
