Facebook and privacy

So many sites these days use the facebook social plugin to link into facebook and let people post comments.

If I visit a site while logged into facebook my profile is there ready for me to comment with. If I don't make any comments is my facebook identity revealed to the host of the site?

Re: Facebook and privacy

If I visit a site that uses social plugins but I don't interact with them, has any information been shared about me?
No. When you simply view a social plugin on another site, it's like a window into Facebook. It may appear personalized, but none of your information - your name or profile (timeline) information, what you like, who your friends are, what they have liked, what they recommend - is shared. Similarly, no personal information about your actions is provided to advertisers.

the above was taken from the facebook help centre .... here is more info you might need to know about the facebook social pluggins >>> https://www.facebook.com/help/?page=209089222464503

Re: Facebook and privacy

I also have a query regarding facebook, I apologise that it's off topic, but...

When you apply for a job, how do companies gain access to your facebook profile? Can they see your wall posts, and is there any way of gaining access to them, if you delete these posts?

They only gain access if you give them the password, never give them the password, i would be ****ed off if a company asked for mine. It is actually against Facebooks terms and conditions to give out the password i think.

Re: Facebook and privacy

I dont understand the fascination of people with Facebook. You cant use the words 'Facebook' and 'privacy' in the same sentence, its an oxymoron.

Why do you want to give your privacy away? Your privacy is precious, and once you have lost it you cant get it back. Ask anyone who';s famous.

You see people complaining they are 'being bullied on Facebook'. The most obvious solution, delete your account and dont use it, never seems to occur to them.

Actually, deleting your account is another problem. FB keeps everything foir years, even if you've 'deleted' it. Its another lesson about the internet, ie once you posted up on the net, its there forever, as some people have found to there cost when applying for jobs.

And dont forget, Facebook is scanned and read by the security forces. Its simply the CIA's global online 24/7 surveillance operation. Why on earth would you want to cooperate with them ?

Millions of people on the planet don't use facebook, and there life doesn't collapse. You dont need it. No one does.

what he says is pretty spot on to be fair. if you want your life to remain private, don't put it on the internet - especially Facebook. and yes, FB does retain your account and info within it for quite some time. you can re-enable your account anything up to 6 months after you selected to 'delete' it. And Facebook is indeed used by authorities to obtain information on people if the need arises.

take the tin hat off and open your eyes a little. I hate the immediate linching of people who dare mention that governments / forces have or use information that the general public can't / don't know about. why so blinkered and frightened of those who dare to say it?

Deleting your Facebook account
Quote:
How do I permanently delete my account?
If you deactivate your account from your Security Settings page, your profile (timeline) disappears from the Facebook service immediately. People on Facebook will not be able to search for you. Some information, like messages you sent, may still be visible to others.

In case you want to come back to Facebook at some point, we save your profile (timeline) information (friends, photos, interests, etc.) so that the information on your profile (timeline) will be there when you come back. A lot of people deactivate their accounts for temporary reasons.

If you do not think you will use Facebook again and would like your account deleted, keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added. If you would like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log in to your account and then submit your request here.

There's this strange view some people have that users of facebook put every minute detail about their lives on it, thereby leaving themselves open to having that information stolen/collected/harvested etc.

Whilst I'm sure some people do put more information than is necessary on their profiles, it's pretty daft to assume all or even most do.

The only information I put on mine is what I want people to know about me.

Handing around the tin foil hats only serves to encourage misinformation.

That's just it. Social networks (be they Facebook or whoever) can only share the information that you (or others) put in about you. They will ask for all sorts of private and personal information, but you do not have to put all that information in, and there is no way they can ensure a lot of it is correct, even if you do.

there's also a strange view that some people have, whereby anyone who mentions that governments or forces are doing things the general public don't know about are conspiracists and the use of tin hats is required.

immediately jumping on someone when they mention a government, CIA, FBI, et cetera and implying they are 'nuts' by the sarcastic use of comments such as

this is meant to be a forum where people can freely debate topics in a mature manner without the threat of being ridiculed, called an idiot or labelled as crazy in a way that almost encourages others to follow suit and do the same. no one needs cliques.

in my opinion.

You must also remove every cookie from your machine , some bits of software/websites log onto your fb account silently without you knowing, thus if you set it to delete it cancels it. Getting rid of a FB account is harder than you think.
