Question Wi Fi monitor

Have a Wi fi system in place at my office.
If I give permission of a member of staff to use it via his laptop for his person use (would trust him with password that not a problem) Would he “bypass” the checks in place of inapprote use of the internet? Or would my web monitor still pick it up & if set to, block the web site. I must add I have no reason to think this might be a problem. Just wondering if I would be opening a can of worms?

Re: Wi Fi monitor

This will depend very much on the layout of your office network and especially how the internet activities might be scanned.

If the network is a simple one i.e modem <> wireless router <> computers, then the only monitoring being done is whatever you might have installed on that router, and that is going to track wireless and wired use. You might be able to bypass that by placing the user into a DMZ?

In more complex business environments there is usually an arrangement such as
internet connection <> firewall <> network servers and computers.
The firewall will do the monitoring functions.
If a wireless access is provided between the internet connection and firewall then no monitoring is likely, if the wireless access is on the network side of the firewall it would be monitored unless specifically excluded.

The best policy is to say yes he can use the connection, but use is subject to normal office policies on computer activity. Thus if he is browsing for porn, he should be doing it elsewhere, and filesharing stuff would be a nono (irrespective of your liabilities why would you want him tying up your bandwidth to the detriment of your business use).

Re: Wi Fi monitor

Thank you will have it setup as you suggest so it is before the firewall.
also in force it with signed company policy ( more worried about file share to be honest) Not that I think he does - but safety first.
