I +1 gmail.
I currently sync my gmail and google contacts, calender with my iPad, iMac and android phone. Its so much easier to keep everything up to date. eg if I change anything the server is automatically updated and changes appear almost right away on the other devices.

If you have an iPhone and haven't set up any email for it, why not get a free iCloud account from Apple? The integration is seamless and calendar compatibility is better, especially if you start to need to do anything more complex like multiple calendars.

Re: gmail or windows live? i want to start syncing to my iphone (calendar, rss feeds)
me.com and mac.com email addresses are all being upgraded from MobileMe to iCloud. If you got yours in the last couple of months, and didn't pay for it, then it's an iCloud account.
This is the email and calendar service designed to work with iOS devices. It has a decent webmail interface that works fine on a PC so long as your browser is up to date and can also be configured to run as an IMAP account in a mail client like Outlook express.

iCloud is just an IMAP mail system so there's no fundamental reason why it shouldn't work on any decent mail client on any device.
The full manual settings are in post 6 of this discussion:

Re: gmail or windows live? i want to start syncing to my iphone (calendar, rss feeds)
I use both gmail and Hotmail and prefer Hotmail. Functionally they are effectively both the same; I've just never liked gmail's web interface, while Hotmail looks more like Outlook.
If you need to sync with Outlook then it's got to be Hotmail as the Outlook Connector is brilliant. Far better than trying to use pop3 or imap with gmail.
But I'd also agree with the comment about using the mail from the same provider as your phone. gmail is best on Android and Hotmail on WP7. Not tried iCloud to comment on it.

iOS + iCloud = seamless, especially with calendars.

You just get the best experience. GMail was great on my Android and Windows Live is great on my Windows Phone, but neither were as good on the opposite OS.
