Anonymous doing good?
Apparently Anonymous have done some hacking that, on the face of it at least, is actually good for the community.. They have hacked and effectively disabled a hosting company that was hosting at least 40 sites containing child pornography. They have also published details of nearly 1600 members of one site.
Now, the reason I say on the face of it is simple. They have attacked the hosting company. Fair enough. They don't have the power to imprison or physically punish those behind the sites though, who may well just move to another hosting company.
They may also have disrupted investigations by the authorities into those sites. The authorities obviously do have the power to imprison or physically punish those who are involved.

Re: Anonymous doing good?
I don't know, I'm kind of worried that they even knew where to find such websites.

Re: Anonymous doing good?
They've frequently done things in the past that could count as "good".
Of course I'd probably describe them as chaotic rather than good or evil.

Well i dont condone hacking Stuart but this may be an exception.....
These people were doing quite evil things.... Should they have just ignored them like everyone else and let them continue??
I guess its a very FINE LINE.... (Hacking is bad for the most part)

Re: Anonymous doing good?
Well, knowing what Tor is like it's likely that the authorities wouldn't have much luck getting the hosts of the site - FreedomHosting.
The information released by anonymous however should now make it pretty easy to find out who was responsible for the hosting of this material, and therefore a lot easier for the authorities to get involved.
I had a look at the info released - looks like they've posted the name and address of the owner of Freedom hosting.

And the fact that they obtained the info illegally makes it difficult, if not impossible, for the authorities to act on it. If any case gets to court as a result of this info, any lawyer could argue that Anonymous altered the data before it was released. The prosecution would have to prove it wasn't altered. A task which may be easier said than done.

Re: Anonymous doing good?
Is it impossible for the authorities to act on the information?? My understanding is that the authorities themselves can't do anything illegal to gain the information but if the information comes from a 3rd party no matter how it was obtained it is still actionable. Otherwise you'd never be able to use a criminal informant or similar..
The only problem with the information as you've stated is chain of evidence but it doesn't stop the information being used to point the investigation in the right direction.

FBI probes Anonymous intercept of US-UK hacking call
Quote:
The FBI is investigating how activists linked to the Anonymous network managed to intercept a conference call between British and US police in which they discussed legal action against hackers.
Anonymous has released a tape of the call in which detectives give details of alleged hackers being tracked.

Re: Anonymous doing good?
They didn't intercept the call - they got hold of an email with an audio file of the conference call.
Lazy reporting, IMHO.
