okay guys, any techie know why I can't access my website?
Here is a connundrum.
I have a website, which is hosted by a third party professional hosting company. I have email boxes associated with this website, which I collect via outlook.
All has been working since June.
Suddenly I can't get access to the website, nor collect my mail. IE reports it cannot display the webpage (neither can Safari, nor Chrome). This applies from my PC and from my sons PC using the same VM broadband connection.
Outlook reports that POP3 & SMTP can't access the server.
I can access all other websites, and my internal VPOP server is collecting mail from our other webhoster ???
Soooo, I contacted my web hoster, complaining my site was down. "No it isn't " he said.
Sure enough, rang my hubby, who could get to my site no problem from his office - he is across the city from me, uses a BT broadband.
So I figured it's this broadband connection. I reset the BB modem & router, flushed my dns cache, and indeed rebooted my PC. Still the same problem
Web hoster is confused, We're wondering if VM are blocking it in some way.
In case any other VM users would like to try, website address is friendly-bookkeeper.co.uk.

Re: okay guys, any techie know why I can't access my website?
What firewalls / antivirus software do you have, and could they be blocking it, either at your computer or router?
There were a number of problems with VM connectivity yesterday that some reported stretched into this morning. I've found sometime that even after such problems are reset it can take a while for information to fully propogate to the end user. Hence when I've moved some websites, I know others are able to see them swiftly, yet I was sat there twiddling fingers.
If you know the IP that hosts the server, can you connect or at least ping, by that rather than using the domain name? What is a traceroute saying?

Try setting a proxy as per below.
Proxy for IE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The proxy goes in your browser.
The proxy to use is : webcache.virginmedia.com
The port number is : 8080
How to set up proxy in Internet Explorer
Step 1 On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
Step 2 Under Proxy server, click to select the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.
Step 3 In the Address box, type the IP address of the proxy server. (e.g. proxy.abc.com or 202.188.17.24)
Step 4 In the Port box, type the port number that is used by the proxy server for client connections (by default, 8080).
Step 5 You can click to select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box if you do not want the proxy server computer to be used when you connect to a computer on the local network.
Step 6 Click OK to close the LAN Settings dialog box.
Step 7 Click OK again to close the Internet Options dialog box.
Proxy for Firefox
Here is a proxy add on for Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2464
To enable proxy settings in Firefox
Select Tools -> Options. ( In some Firefox browser's you have to go to Edit>Preferences usually in LInux )
Select Advanced.
Open the Network tab.
In 'Connections' area click 'Settings' button.
Select Manual Proxy Configuration radio button.
In the necessary proxy field(s), put the same settings in the HTTP field then
Click 'OK'

Thanks Masque, setting the proxy does work, so that would get me round the difficulty of accessing my website pro-tem. Doesn't solve the problem of my mail access tho'.
Does it give us a clue what is happening ?

Re: okay guys, any techie know why I can't access my website?
The tracert on a 'friendly name' proves 2 issues. The name friendly-bookkeeper.co.uk is being resolved successfully to a numeric address which means DNS lookup is working. The tracert arrives at the destination address which demonstrates that the route is working and the server is responding to a ping.
I can view the website without issue from Lincoln which would suggest that the problem is local to you and possibly something on your machine which is blocking access to the address. Have you made any changes recently to your security setup?

Cheers.
Well, it isn't my PC, the problem arises from any PC in this house - so going thru our router/BB connection.
Now, we did change some security settings last week, but that was to relax the security we had in place , so that our son could get access to World of Warcraft (he's at that age). Neither my hubby nor I can work out why that would cause problems with accessing this particular address (and apparently only this address).

We have looked again at our router settings. We can't see anything there that is causing this problem, and my husband is firmly convinced that this problem is outside our environment.
Can/would VM block a particular address from a customer ??

Re: okay guys, any techie know why I can't access my website?
That other VM based customers have been able to access your site indicates it is not a general VM issue or blockage but something specific to your connection.
I'd be looking very closely at whatever "security" changes you made in the last few days.

That link I posted is hosted on the same server as your site. Most puzzling eh?
