Downloading a video from You Tube
A friend of mine was trying to download a video from youtube to use in a road safety lecture. The video clip is one that has been released to give an anti drink drive message, and isn't covered by any copyright. The trouble is we can't work out how to do it.
Any ideas anyone (in simple terms)?

Try Realplayer as it has a plugin for ie and FF to allow downloading directly to disk from youtube and many other sites. It will not work though on DRM videos

Re: Downloading a video from You Tube
There's also many more found easily by googling "youtube download" most of which have been mentioned on CF before when the questions popped up in the past.

Re: Downloading a video from You Tube
If you're a Firefox user there's an extension called Download Helper which is the dog's oojah quapivlios for downloading video from sites like You Tube and other similar.
Best of all it's free and well supported with regular updates.
Giy it a go lad!

I use a Greasemonkey script called YouTube HD Suite: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/39167
Does a number of things but one feature is to add download links direct into Youtube pages.

Re: Downloading a video from You Tube
You can always go and get it from the cache: Clear the cache, play the video, it will be the biggest file in the cache, copy it to a new name and pop an .flv (if it's another format just use the appropriate extension) after it.
Seems to work for most streaming sites except BBC i-Player, which never properly caches the entire video.

Re: Downloading a video from You Tube
Thanks to you all for your help. The first one I tried was Vloader, and that worked well, so that's the one I told my mate about.

I think broadcast stuff tends to do what the BBC i-player does in that the whole stream is NOT buffered, only the segment that you're watching. That's not to say that there's some crafty geek out there that's worked out how to save the buffered segments on the fly, after all the data has to be buffered on the PC somewhere in order to decode and play it.
