Domain advice please

hi all, I'm after a little advice on a topic that is relatively new to me and from experience, figured out this was the best place to come to.

a friend of mine runs a small safety product company, and is looking to have a domain with the comany name in it. we've already sourced this and found that its available. what were not sure of is who to register it with...if thats the next step... and he's not after webspace for a company website, just 5 company email address's we've looked at a couple of providers so far and tending to prefer 1&1 hosting as they appear to be reasonable priced for the package we're interested in. Domain name for Special Offer of: £2.49 for the first year, then £2.99 per year. and 1&1 Instant Mail (5 dedicated POP3/IMAP e-mail accounts)6 months £ 0.29 then £0.69 /mo.

is this the type of package he should be looking at for his requirements? will his staff be able to use Outlook for those 5 email address's... or only webmail? anyone know of hidden costs?

any advice appreciated

Re: Domain advice please

Register it with 123-reg.co.uk if a .co.uk domain or Namecheap.com for any other TLD.
Then just use the free Google Apps where you get _upto_ 50 "dedicated POP3/IMAP" accounts and pretty much all the services that come under a regular google account to boot ..or even Microsofts own Live Domains service

Re: Domain advice please

Personally I use domain monster www.domainmonster.com for all my domains, they also offer email packages, or you could jsut host your own email server on an old pc, I do this and use hmail which was easy to set up and use.

Re: Domain advice please

If you do later decide to build a website, 1&1 do a good package that includes your domain and webspace. I currently have one and pay about £3 per month.

Re: Domain advice please

Cheers for the responses guys.

We're still interested in the 1&1 hosting, but v0id's advice regarding the free google apps may be of interest to my mate and his business. Intending to run it by him tomorrow morning, when he picks their PC up... They've got that 'windows recovery' virus on there and it's another task delegated to me.. I can see another thread coming soon....it's a b...#$¥tch.

Anyways, thanks again for the responses guys. As always it's been much appreciated

Re: Domain advice please

Avoid 1&1 hosting like the plague. Trust me

You can't go wrong in registering it with 123-Reg. Don't take any of their extras. It's always good sense to kee you're domain registration and hosting seperate.

As for webhosting a UK Based cPanel hosting company will do the trick..

I can reccomend flump http://www.flump.net/hosting_bronze.php

Re: Domain advice please

Google apps (free/standard edition) has recently done an email shot giving notice that their new limit is 10 email addresses (old accounts will still have the old limit)

Re: Domain advice please

Thanks for the advice guys. He's opted for the 1&1 hosting, and seeing as it's the first time I've set up something like this, it's been suprsisingly quick and easy

Obviously, if he has any problems with the service, I'll report back.

Cheers all.
