Hosting for a world wide website
I have a website that has users from Europe, America, South Africa and Australia/NZ and lately the Oz guys are complaining that it's a bit slow.
Currently the server is in the UK but I was wondering if anyone has experience with a hosting company that has good routes to supply everyone with a reasonable service.
I know that some will always be slower than others but would like a host/location that evens out the playing field a bit.

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
When im shopping for a web host, I ping the hosting companies URL, its not an entirely accurate way of measuring, as some smaller web host companies host their own site on a separate/off site server, but your best bet is to find a high rated european web host, and get your users from accross the world to ping the URL and make sure they get a decent result. also, look at the TTL on CMD ping command, it stands for Time To Load (I presume you dont need me to explain that lol)

Or a provider who can cache at one of their local datacentres.

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
Tried Godaddy's new 4GH service (cloud hosting) at their dutch data centre with a copy of the site on a spare domain.. Ping is good but their service is slower than my little slow server on my home connection which currently hosts the site to those in OZ

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
To be honest, after doing a bit of research myself, the speeds from Oz to practically anywhere is never that good, I just think the trunk lines into Oz are overused and their broadband is expensive so it stands to reason that their fixed lines and available bandwidth are too

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
Yep, I tried tracert from some of the Oz ISP data centres (using http://www.traceroute.org ) to various sites and they were all good 200-300 ping, where I tried tracert to the IP's of some of the site users and they were ridiculous (1-2+ seconds).
Was though surprised that godaddy's cloud is slow in response as I don't think it's just the ping times making it do 30+second page loads.

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
I've used a company in Italy before - dead cheap / good easy service but dealing with them in Italian was a nightmare. I've moved away from them now.

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
Yet Tenere.ws is on professional hosting..
The slowness is due to the images on the first page, once cached it speeds up tremendously

Also strange really as my ping to you is less than 40ms

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
Kymmy. I think the only way to get what you want is to use something a content delivery network like Amazon CloudFront. I don't think it especially matters where you host the site, more improvements would be realised by the quality of the servers.

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
I was hoping that Godaddy's version of that would do, but as usual it seems to be hyped up beyond it's capabilities

Re: Hosting for a world wide website
I am testing CloudFlare.com which is a sort of CDN they have a Free package and a Pro package at $20 per month.
They say they cache the following formats:
css / js / jpg / jpeg / gif / ico / png / bmp / pict / csv
doc / pdf / pls / ppt / tif / tiff / eps / swf / midi / mid
ttf / eot / woff / svg /svgz
They currently have 6 datacenters, but are expanding to 14 datacenters around the world.
As I said I am currently testing them and my VM connects to there US server, but not there NL server, but that another story.
Once all datacenters are open they will have them in the following places:
Hong Kong
Singapore
Tokyo (Online now)
Frankfurt
London
Paris
Amsterdam (Online now)
Miami
Ashburn (Online now)
New York
Chicago (Online now)
Dallas
Los Angeles (Online now)
San Jose (Online now)
Maybe they can help.
You stay with your current host, but change the nameservers to theres.
