Why do people get scared about ip's?

I'm not trying to start up a closed thread but I was reading this thread and I thought what is the big deal with people and their ip's?

Re: Why do people get scared about ip's?

Some people are best living in a Faraday cage with no access to the outside world at all given that they get paranoid at the slightest access from the outside world to them.

That's about it really.

Shame I missed that thread would have been quite funny by the looks.

The only party that can get serious amounts of information from your IP address is, err, your ISP who are already quite familiar with you

Re: Why do people get scared about ip's?

As Igni says, the whole hoo-ha about IP addy's is just paranoia.

Anyone using a router has a private IP range which will be identical to anyone elses with the same make of router.

The router gets the public IP from your ISP.

To be honest i don't think that the original post in that thread had anything to do with IP address security. I think it was more intended as a dig at this forum and its admins

Re: Why do people get scared about ip's?

it is over paranoia, its possible VM may well know exactly who I am (if ip passed on) when I make bad points about the superhub congestion etc. but at the end of the day I am making comments, nothing illegal.

And was that because of their IP addresses?

No sorry I do not know the details and it was a while ago and I do not say it was anything to do with the forum or admin either

But as was stated last night in that thread they don't pass on ip address's.

To be honest i think the only users if any on this forum who could be in trouble should ip information be passed are staff of VM posting on here. And that is only if they are posting company confidential information and VM pursue that poster. I am VM staff and i don't post company confidential information on here then i know i am safe. I fully accept and trust what Paul M said when he stated that ip's are NOT passed

ok I will spell it out to you and I do not say this is happening its just a possible case scenario . I repeat I am not casting aspersions or making accusations

VM see a staff member slagging off VM

Forum gives VM Staff members IP and it happens to belong to VM range

VM knows who it is slagging off company and consequences ensue

Re: Why do people get scared about ip's?

But you just said that you did not know the details, and Paul stated that CF did not give IPs to VM, so that seems an unlikely hypothesis.
