Importing mail into new Gmail account

I've just created a new gmail account to receive forwarded e.mail from (and thereby backup) my main hotmail account. I've noticed gmail has an option to import mail and contacts from other providers' accounts but am wondering if this option will only copy what's currently displayed in the actual 'inbox'. I've set up some folders for certain categories of 'in' and 'sent' mail in my Hotmail A/C and would also like copy what's in those folders as well anything they don't contain which is left in the sent box. Is this possible with gmail or would my only option be to manually forward all that stuff to the new account?

Cheers as always.

Re: Importing mail into new Gmail account

Not used the import feature in Google, but you can always use an email client on your PC to upload mail to Google with whatever folder structure you want.

Configure both accounts and then drag & drop.

Well I like the drag and drop idea but what's an email client and how do I set it up to do this?

FAQ says:

Quote:
Yes, your folders, attachments and downloads, as well as other elements belonging to the message directly will be imported. See step 5 of the set-up for an option to create a label to attach to all the emails imported from the other account. Learn more about the differences between labels and folders.
