Question Forum Software (Recommendations)

Can anyone recommend any good Forum Software. Its been a while since I installed a Forum (old PHPBB v2 or v1 even).

I've seen SMF (Free) and this looks good as I can disable Signup to Forum & only ADD the users I want that email me (running a Club so dont want it OPEN to all to Join)

There will be a few 100's joining in the end (maybe 500+) But is SMF good? Or do I need to buy something like vbulletin.com

If the Signup page had a option (easy for a novice to edit) that allowed extra boxes to add like Post Code or Number then I could use any Forum.

PHPBB seams to over complex (installed a Demo on a domain I have) Backend is complex & to set Admins & Moderators & Permissions is a faff. I only want a few sections & same Moderators for all & basic stuff

Backup of Forum is important so must be easy too lol

Any ideas or recommendations??

Cheers

Re: Forum Software (Recommendations)

It's very dependant on how much modifications you also want on the forum..

Vb is great in that you don;t have to start chopping up code to add plugins/mods where as phpbb3 to add for example better bbcode you end up modifying code.. and when it comes to updates you find that you end up again modifying the same code.

Personally I use a joomla as a front end with a forum of kunena (just follow my sig to see an example), all mods/plugins/components are simple to install.. I then mix that with community builder (another joomla component) that provides me with a good community platform. Other stuff I install is a gallery, calendar and other stuff that will be dependant on what you want from a site.

The good thing about joomla/kunena compared with Vb is that it's free, but not many forum software will ever come close to the configuration/support and add-on capability of Vb

Re: Forum Software (Recommendations)

TBH, I wouldn't buy vbulletin any more. Their move to vb4 (the only version you can now buy) has been beset with bugs and issues, even on their own forum. It's also downright expensive compared to before they were bought out.

If you are going to a paid board then http://www.invisionpower.com/products/board/ seem to be quite popular now, but I know nothing about the cost or functionality.

Just because an admin panel might seem a little complex now, don't dismiss it. There may be more tools than you need now, but if your forum does grow you may be glad of them later. It's not just the ability to set up your mod and admin permissions, it's the day to day functions of controlling posts (move, split, merge, etc) that are more important. To this end phpbb could well be more potent.

If you choose something that is a popular board you'll also find that many will have created mods, addons, alternative styles and stuff that you can use. Few forums out there, except really small ones, will be in their developer original format. Even over at NTHW where we only have about 30 regular visitors, the board has had numerous addons.

Most forum backup is simply a case of having a copy of the ftp files, and most importantly a copy of the sql database. It's the latter that can be a challenge as remote connectivity is preferred if you want to pull a copy to your local PC. Any inbuilt backup system will normally only write a file copy to somewhere else on the server, and that's insufficient if your server disk goes belly up. For remote access I found MySQL Admin, a freebie add on for mySQL to be reliable and could even make scheduled time bakcups.

Whatever board you do opt for now, ensure it is mainstream so that conversion filters are likely to be available if you want to swap to something else. There is nothing worse than being stuck with one bit of software that you hate just because your site will loose all it's content.

Re: Forum Software (Recommendations)

Sorry forgot to mention I cant think of ANY Mods to add as of Yet. Skin/Design will be Plain to load faster.

The goal is the Forum/Comments not share pics & all Games & Addons.

So the Free ones will be ok?

I hate the Upgrade to newer Forum as when I did it with old PHPBB it messed up. Do people update every version?

Re: Forum Software (Recommendations)

You do need to upgrade from time to time. Many upgrade versions are in fact patches to fix secuity issues and bugs rather than to enhance or add versions. But in most cases if you stick to the same series, it's a patch and should be OK, it's when the version number changes that you need to be more careful as that may be changing a lot of stuff both at copd and database level. i.e. 3.7.5 to 3.7.6 is a patch in Vbulletin but 3.7.x to 3.8.x is an update and 3.x.x to 4.x.x is a complete rewrite.

Free software such as phpbb is perhaps more vulnerable than paid software. The free software code will be available to all and sundry. Paid for and you have to start messing around to run it, even if that is on a local box somewhere. But even vbulletin releases updates every month or two.

http://forum.snitz.com/ - One forum I used to use was on Snitz, not sure if there was any particular reason they moved to something else.

Re: Forum Software (Recommendations)

I think you also have to look to the future..

One of the sites I run was originally founded on proboards, the admins vanished and the choice came to move it to a dedicated site on phpbb3.. Migration was a pain as we had to use a site ripper and then automatically generate passwords..

If I knew what I knew now about phpbb3 due to the tedious upgrade system, especially if you have any mods/add-ons at all, I wouldn't have chosen it yet it was one of the very few choices for the site ripper

Just gonna finally migrate that site from phpbb3 to kunena/joomla this weekend and bid farewell to phpbb3
