Question VPN / Tiscali

Hi,

I have a customer that connects to their workplace over a simple PPTP VPN.

After 30 mins the VPN disconnects.

The following have been tested:

Logged in as the customer from my home PC to the company VPN - stayed connected for 1hr plus so this rules out any mis-config at the server end.

Originaly I thought it might be a problem with the laptop config - but today the customer rings and says they have been elsewhere and the VPN was fine.

I've concluded that the home connection must be a fault somewhere. Got into the router today and all looks fine.

The only possible cause I can think of is the ISP - the customer if with Tiscali - could they be shaping traffic causing the VPN to disconnect?

Clutching at straws I know but I need to find a solution.

Ideas welcome!

Re: VPN / Tiscali

Most VPN connections have a lease period before it automatically disconnects. Mine is 86400 seconds (1 day).

You need to find the setting that defines this.

Yep - I know the timeout period - this has been checked. The customer says it disconnects every 30 mins (without fail) on the laptop but I've tested it and it stayed connected for an hour and longer on my home PC.

The customer reported today that they were out on a conference with wifi and they used the VPN and it stayed connected.

But when at the customers home it'll disconnect after "30 mins"*

*Could be any time period as I've not seen it myself.

I'm quite sure it's something to do with the router or connection.
