US shuts down file-sharing sites
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11863288
Quote:
More than 70 sites alleged to be selling counterfeit goods or offering pirated content have been shut down by the US government.
The action was taken by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, part of the US Department of Homeland Security.
Domains seized included a BitTorrent search engine, music download sites and shops selling fake designer clothing.
|
Getting serious!
Quote:
|
The action comes as the UK's Serious and Organised Crime Agency seeks similar powers over .uk domains it deems are involved in criminal activity.

Re: US shuts down file-sharing sites
I would imagine this would only effect people who upload to these sites. I think that if people have posted a link to material on one of these forums then they could be in trouble but I don't think people who have downloaded from the links posted will have left any information ip address etc.
I think that is right but I may be wrong.
What it does show though is that there is an increased effort to take these sites off the web.

not going to stop them is it

Many of the sites who lost their domains have continued trading via alternative addresses.

I doubt it ,they will just spring up somewhere else .Look at the pirate bay fiasco ,the men behind it got a year in jail and fined but the site is still going ,absolutely nothing was achieved

Re: US shuts down file-sharing sites
All they are doing is taking over the domains and redirecting the DNS. Not touching the servers or the site itself. They can use domains not controlled by either the UK or US governments and be fine.

Re: US shuts down file-sharing sites
If you want to know any real info about this or any other file sharing story there is a great site for all that kind of news (which includes a full list of the sites closed down). Personally I had not heard of a single one before.

Torrent-Finder is not a typical torrent site where one can download torrent files. It’s merely a meta-search engine that redirects users to other sites. The site simply displays a search box and has no browsable archive. The site is not encouraging or even facilitating copyright infringement any more than other search engines such as Google.
So the question that we’d like to see answered is what the grounds were to seize Torrent-Finder? Could it have been a mistake? Or perhaps a test?
|
cheers for that Slyone ,it would appear that the DOJ may be overstepping it's bounds in shutting down the Torrent finder website .It is not a torrent site
