ISPs to censor internet?

Quote:
The UK governments Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey, has ominously proposed that broadband ISPs could introduce a new Mediation Service that would allow them the freedom to censor third party content on the internet, without court intervention, in response to little more than a public complaint.
Not good.

Re: ISPs to censor internet?

This is nothing more than what amounts to a pipe dream from someone new in his job

Quote:
I am sure that many internet companies will say that that is almost impossible, but when one hears stories such as that told by my hon. Friend the Member for Milton Keynes North, one wants at least to attempt to give consumers some opportunity to have a dialogue with internet companies, as they would be able to do if a newspaper had inadvertently published that information.
A none story to be honest

Re: ISPs to censor internet?

This is going to be controversial, but I can see the point of this.

I am opposed to excessive censorship. In fact, I think in general our censorship laws are already too tight.

However, the point behind this law is simple.

There are large companies who are gathering a staggering amount of data about everyone, and are publishing it in large quantities online. Some of this data, when published, is dangerous. Some companies make it fairly easy to request (and get) the data removed. While I disagree with Google gathering large amounts of data, I'll give them credit, when I complained about data about me that they had published, they removed it quickly and without any hassle.

Not all companies are like that, and with data being hosted in different countries, it can be hard to gain a legal resolution to any dispute involving the data.

As I understand it, what is being proposed is a system where the data won't necessarily be deleted, but most people's access to it in this country will be blocked. Similar to what the IWF already does, but with the difference that if we individually have any problem with a website, we cannot report it to the IWF.

The Register has been a frequent critic of the way we are moving to a heavily monitored society, but have a far more balanced article on this at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10...ernet_privacy/

Re: ISPs to censor internet?

Blimey does this bloke's non-job still exist after the HMG spending review? another civil servant proposing the creation of more non-jobs to try and achieve the unachievable. How predictable, nothing to see here folks.

Re: ISPs to censor internet?

I can see this happening to be honest, how effective it will be is another matter.

I think as with most things they will say it is for one thing and then abuse it.

This is a completely different thing, what you need to be concerned about is the Digital Economy Act, or DEA. All ISP's with over 400,000 customers will be subject to this act.
