Any good Web hosting and domain registration?
I'm looking at registerig a .co.uk web address and getting some web space.
Its for a personal site and I won't need too much space.
Does anyonek now some good companies to go with and who are cheapest?
Many thanks.
halcyon.

Re: Any good Web hosting and domain registration?
I wouldn't register your domain name with the same company you use for your hosting.
My domain names are registered through www.easily.co.uk and my hosting is through Vooservers.

123-reg.co uk for domain registration (well, *.uk anyway)
I personally use asmallorange.com for my hosting, but then I've got a very good deal with them.

Re: Any good Web hosting and domain registration?
My favourite for domain names is 1&1 ( www.1and1.co.uk) - I use the same company for my hosting - on a VPS but on a different bill so they are not linked together

Update:
I went with 1&1 in the end. They had a package which was £2.49 for the first year and that included my address and 5GB of webspace.

Re: Any good Web hosting and domain registration?
I should have guessed I'd mess up somewhere.
I can only afford the beginner package and it doesnt seem to let me upload an SQL database.

Do you already have a domain registered, Halcyon?

Re: Any good Web hosting and domain registration?
If you looked at the features list that's the only one missing Dynamic Site features`

If you need SQL then your choices are to pay what 1&1 want to host your domain, including SQL database(s), or keep the domain registered with them & look for another host for the domain, e.g. Voo servers.
Tbh Voo Servers look the better option for a 'beginner' as they offer the 'standard' cPanel & fantastico auto-installer options, which 1 & 1 don't seem to do???

Re: Any good Web hosting and domain registration?
Most webhosting basic or "home user" packages unfortunately don't include SQL database functions. They often also have limited monthly bandwith allowances, data storage capacity including size limits on the SQL and so on. As you've just worked out, you do have to consider what is actually provided for the money. Most of the webhosts websites will list the functions for a comparision, although sometimes the critical information can be hidden behind expanding drop down screens.
If you have ordered this as a domestic customer I'm not sure but there may be a cooling off period that allows early cancellation.
Beware too when you read websites as to the actual charges. Are they inclusive or exclusive VAT (especially with the fothcoming changes. Are there added charges for exceeding bandwidth allowances, or does the site just go inactive? Is a low headline price per month likely to be more expensive after an initial term of say 3 months?
