I wonder how long usenet will last now? It's been under the radar for some years but due to everything else being closed down it's getting more and more popular.

Good advertising for newzbin, which is a different setup to the original newzbin that got taken down so not sure the original ruling stands.

re: [Update] Newzbin, Court orders blocking of Newzbin2 site by BT

Yep and the nice people at Newzbin 2 are now threatening to break the child pornography filter.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14293730

Quote:
Mr White pledged that Newzbin 2 would attempt to "ensure continuity of service to our UK users" if a judge rules against it again.

He warned that keeping the site up may involve attempts to break BT's Cleanfeed filter, which the ISP currently uses to block access to sites featuring child sex abuse.

"Our users don't wish Cleanfeed to work and based on a preliminary technical assessment we think it will be trivially breakable. We have the sand, and if needed we will pour it in Cleanfeed's engine oil," he threatened.
Hardly surprising a guy who represents a site that makes its money peddling links to copyright content not being entirely nice but nicely polarises the debate against his side of the discussion - he's now saying they're quite happy to break BT's child pornography filtering to peddle their warez, not the best PR move.

Presumably they mean finding technical ways to prevent their site being caught up in the filter, that seems far more likely than bringing down the entire system.

Nah, they probably intend on poisoning the system so it fails to work full stop, from how cleanfeed works it wouldn't be that hard to do really.

For what it's worth I'm completely against cleenfeed in principle anyway, so hope they do. I don't see why an unelected unchallengeable that answers to no one can dictate what content can and can't be shown. It blocks in a completely haphazard way as well that means that legal content gets caught up in it as well.

We have laws about viewing content that's illegal in this country, leave it at that. Don't nanny the Internet especially not via an unanswerable 3rd party.

When it was first bought in I said it was the thin end of the wedge, today child porn, tomorrow anything the government disagrees with. And now here we are just 7 years later and it's grown from child porn, to obscene porn, to hate speech, to copyright infringement, what's next? Libel? Slander? Will twitter get blocked because of people breaching injunctions on there? If someone disagrees with what you say will they be able to get cleenfeed to block it?

You might say that's crazy, but 7 years ago it was crazy to say it would be used to block anything but child porn.

The precedent has been set, expect to see torrent and nzb indexing sites disappear from the UK Internet despite them also having a legal use.

Tear the entire filter down.

No, I don't think he's saying that at all. The link is made by the author of the article, neatly juxtaposed to make it look as though the Newzbin guy is saying it.
Note - I don't want to sound as though I am defending them, but without complete context it's very hard to know if the Newzbin guy raised the issue of Child Porn or just the idea of breaking CleanFeed (which happens to block that, but it blocks other things as well.)

Just out of interest, how does Tivo fit into this? What is the legal difference between my setting a Tivo box to record a show to keep, and my downloading a torrent of the same show? Does it delete files after a certain time (like the iPlayer)?

Timeshifting is perfectly legal in the UK, but you're not meant to keep things indefinitely, you're only meant to keep them to watch at a more convenient time.
Everyone keeps things indefinitely though, and no one will ever be prosecuted for it.

Programs won't get deleted, although for a while studios pushed for that to happen.

The legal difference is in the fact one's a recording of a live broadcast, the other is a copy of a recording of a live broadcast. The recording of the live broadcast is a legal copy, the copy of a recording of a live broadcast is an infringing copy.

Re: [Update] Newzbin, Court orders blocking of Newzbin2 site by BT

I regularly download tv programs like torchwood ,eureka and others ,i am not downloading them for free i pay my license fee and i pay my tv subscription so as far as i am concerned i am not illegally downloading and yet the rights holders want to stop people accessing their programs on the internet and watching them on the medium of their choice .Its about time these companies stopped fighting the internet and used it to their advantage

BBC only licence downloading of lets say Torchwood for 7 days, acquiring it from anywhere else and for a longer length of time could be against copyright.

I don't though think that's an issue to them instead the main argument is music tracks and movies

but in chasing a minimal amount of lost revenue through file sharing they will affecting thousands of legal downloaders .Somebody still needs to convince me that downloading torchwood or any made for tv program is illegal or wrong and it's us that will be affected as well .Also what about films that are shown on tv we can record them via dvd players ,V+ or sky+ and keep them for as long as we want ,whats the difference from me downloading such a film to my hard drive to watch at my leisure ?.As long as i don't distribute it then i am not breaking the law because i have paid to watch it through license and subscription fees

Re: [Update] Newzbin, Court orders blocking of Newzbin2 site by BT

Technically, you're not actually allowed to keep DVR'd stuff forever. Only meant for timeshifting something so it can be watched at a more convenient time, not for keeping it indefinitely (as TheDon explained earlier).

I agree with you, though.

Although it is still copyright infringement (not theft! ) to download TV episodes, just like it is for films and music etc., I have no moral issues with it myself, as I see it as a totally different thing to downloading films/albums: I have a TV licence and a Sky subscription, so what is wrong with downloading an episode of something so that I can watch it at my convenience on a device of my choosing. OK, it means for non-BBC stuff I will miss out on adverts... but, then again, I don't watch adverts on broadcast TV either, as I always + stuff and FFWD them.

I also think that if "they" want to cut down on TV downloading, they should show things in the UK much closer to their US broadcast. Sky has been very good with a lot of US shows, with some things broadcast only one week (or less) after the US. FX was also good last season by showing The Walking Dead so close to the US broadcast. But... some stuff is still very, very late (hello True Blood, Sons of Anarchy, and Burn Notice).
