Exclamation WHOIS Data

I've asked my hosting provider to remove some details relating to my web site WHOIS data...ie - telephone number, address etc.

They have come back with:
Quote:
Dear Customer,

the WHOIS is a public database which everyone can access in, to check if a domain is available or not to be registered.
The Authority does not allow to hide the personal details of the holder and of the provider (that is aruba)
(Aruba is my hosting provider)

They registered the domain using: TUCOWS, INC.

So - how can I get my details removed.

Re: WHOIS Data

If its a .co.uk you can "Hide" the info in my 123REG it gives the option.

Any other Domain you cant Hide Address/Phone unless you register & buy domain by a 3rd Party like http://domainsbyproxy.com or the others out there who do this service

Re: WHOIS Data

It's a .com address. Great so now I have my address and phone number plastered over it for all to see.

I know I can submit a change data form so perhaps I could make up the data...or change it in a way so it's not really my data.

Re: WHOIS Data

You are legally obliged to provide your contact information to the whois registry, failure to do so may result in your domain name being revoked (although I've never heard of it happening).

Many domain registrars (myself included) provide a free privacy protection service that hides your contact information perfectly legally. If your registrar doesn't provide this you can transfer to another company.

Alternatively you can try putting fake contact information in and hope that your domain name doesn't get revoked. Again, I have never heard of it happening, but it does state they have the power to do this in the small print.

You can still use domainsbyproxy.com for .com domains. GoDaddy arranges it for me. You might be able to arrange the same thing directly with them or through Tucows

Re: WHOIS Data

with .uk domains if you are a individual not a company you are allowed to hide your details.

Don't think you can with .com, .net etc though

Does it really matter if someone can see your Number/Address ? You could use a PAYG Mobile as Number (does not have to be Land Line) as I've seen others use 0870 numbers & Mobiles too.

Everyone else has their details on WhoIs (unless they run a dodgy site & for Copyright they are trying to Mask their ID) lol

Re: WHOIS Data

If it's a legal website, then what's the worry ?

Keep your details on it and upto date. You never know who might make you a million pound offer for your domain name.
