Website keeps 'sticking' - need some advice

I've got a problem which I am trying to sort out with my web host company but I don't know how to describe it properly.

What happens is that I browse my site and all is well. Then after clicking a few links here and there it suddenly stops. After 30 secs or so Firefox says "server taking too long to respond". If I wait a couple of minutes it starts working again.

During this time I can't browse, log in to control panel, ftp or check email. It's like the whole domain ceases to exist. But wait a few minutes and all starts working again.

This seems to happen numerous times a day. By the time I get in touch with the host company it has started working again so they can't see it in action (or inaction rather).

If I open a cmd window and do ping it returns 4 lines with "Request timed out". Tracert gets this far and then times out:

6 30 ms 11 ms 12 ms 212.43.162.214
7 16 ms 29 ms 23 ms tele-ic-1-as0-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.184.2]
8 16 ms 15 ms 34 ms 212.250.14.90
9 46 ms 32 ms 45 ms ge-5-2.the.uk.euroconnex.net [87.127.231.90]
10 202 ms 16 ms 15 ms ge-9-1-9-2.tcx.uk.euroconnex.net [217.112.81.1]
11 * * * Request timed out.
12 * * * Request timed out.
13 * * * Request timed out.
14 * * * Request timed out.

Can anyone give me some advice - especially some technical phrases that might help me and the host track down what the problem is?

Sounds like either:-
1. The HTTP software is crashing and restarting automatically after a few minutes.
2. Your DNS is playing up.
3. You have a bad route.
4. Their server has a bad connection.

You can check the DNS by trying other sites you haven't visited that day at the time it goes offline.

The rest is up to the hosting company really.
