1&1 domain renewals.
My company's domain ..co.uk was coming up for renewal in April, and the registrar wanted a fortune, so I decided to move in to 1&1 in early March. I thought they'd renew it for 2 more years as soon as the transfer completed.
The transfer completed but it wasn't renewed. I have raised numerous tickets and they have said it will be renewed, don't worry. They have sent me an invoice in the middle of March, although the whois hasn't changed. I called up Billing and they said it will be renewed on the expiry date. Is this normal/safe? AFAIK if domains aren't automatically renewed the go into holding for a couple of months, but ideally I want it sorted sooner. I asked her if she could renew it now and she said she couldn't. My big worry here is losing the domain. It doesn't help my boss keeps getting e-mails saying the domain is about to expire.
Has this happened to anyone else? Did everything go OK on the day of expiry and was renewed?
Many thanx in advance.

Re: 1&1 domain renewals.
I'm not sure if this is common practice, but I certainly used to have the same issue with bt.net on our company's domains - a bit of a concern when you're running a dot.com! fortunately, on this issue, bt used to be true to their word and renew it at the final hour .... there's no reason why it can'y be done earlier - I guess it just helps their cashflow not to hand any to nominet until the last minute

On there it says it gets done automatically unless you opt out.

Cheers guys. Just a bit paranoid about it. As rikur said its all a bit worrying when its a business domain.

Re: 1&1 domain renewals.
HI Gavin,
Did the domain expire recently i.e in the last 60 days ?? if so then all they need to do is send an update command via PGP its really that simple - I aint even kidding - my billing system does this so I am sure theres could.
However, if it was more than 60 days, then its in redemption period and the only way to reteave this is to wait until its public again - which is risky!

Re: 1&1 domain renewals.
Hi wc2050,
Thanks for that.
It hasn't actually expired yet (due 9th April), so it looks from your post its fine. Just thought it was risky to renew on the day it expires? i.e. if something goes wrong, etc. and making sure we have seamless nameserver coverage.
Of course trying to explain all this to the boss who keeps getting warning e-mails from the previous registrar isn't fun either.

Re: 1&1 domain renewals.
Nope that should be fine - you normally have 60 days to renew - renewing it on the day is risky! But its okay!

Re: 1&1 domain renewals.
Many thanks for that. I have notified otherwise but they seem to be resolute at renewing on the day. Oh well. I might ring them up again because my boss keeps on at me.
Thanks for the help though
