I have azureus but i keep getting an error "Failed to establish listen on port UDP:23541. check that other applications aren't already using this port.
Also check for another copy of azureus running"
I have checked for another copy of azureus but still i get really slow downloads.
I am using a laptop with no router i get my internet direct from the socket.
Have you allowed Azureus access through your firewall (assuming you have one running)?

You do need to open port 23541 for both TCP and UDP connections.
Speed of torrents depends on the sender(s). The longer you leave it running often the better it will get, depending on the numbers in the swarm. Many torrents will block you if they can see you don't upload. You must however ensure you are not saturating your upload bandwidth, 80% is a good benchmark setting. It's all a bit of cat and mouse to find the right balance.
