Microsoft offer to buy Yahoo
Quote:
Microsoft has offered to buy the search engine company Yahoo for $44.6bn (£22.4bn) in cash and shares. The offer, contained in a letter to Yahoo's board, is 62% above Yahoo's closing share price on Thursday.
Yahoo cut its revenue forecasts earlier this week and said it would have to spend an additional $300m this year trying to revive the company.
It has been struggling in recent years to compete with Google, which has also been a competitor to Microsoft.

Re: Microsoft offer to buy Yahoo
If it happens it will be interesting to see how they merge.
I think Yahoo will stay it's own entity and for a lot of respects appear independent. I think that Microsoft will take over their search engine and rebrand it 'Live' and that will be used as both the MSN main search and Yahoo main search.
Yahoo as a portal will still exist, as well yahoo mail (imo). Yahoo Messenger will simply give way, slowly, to Windows Live Messenger. Other than that, a few logos at the bottom of flickr, yahoo etc and no other change

Re: Microsoft offer to buy Yahoo
The thing that would bother me about this, MS buying Yahoo I mean, is the number of progs tha come bundled with the Yahoo toolbar. The purchase would give MS access to a lot more pies in which they could insert their corporate finger.

Which is odd because yahoo was the most popular search / portal page before google came along. Yahoo sat at the top of the pile (in the UK) which included lycos / alta vista etc.
If Yahoo had done search as good as Google then they would have been in a better position to be even bigger.

I do recall all the Yahoo ad campaigns a few years ago but it was all before my time either way........PC/Internet time anyway.
At least it`s not "Ask Jeeves it" i suppose

Re: Microsoft offer to buy Yahoo
Personally I think they should rebrand the search engine to 'Y' - so that they could use the phrase 'Just ask Y'.
hmm... think I'll go and register some domain names....

But then you would want to call the user interface a Y-front.
