Re: Moving webhost

So.

Let me check I've understood all of this:

1. I can go to 123Reg and ask them to take over registration of my domain name. At this point that domain name will still point at i-Web's servers, it won't automatically start to point at 123Reg's.
2. I can then set up a hosting account with a different web host and get a hosting package.
3. I can then go to the 123Reg control panel and point my domain name at my new host.

In theory everything is then fairly seamless, aside from the time it takes to get the DNS records amended.

Is that right? Or am I totally confused? I have to confess that (for someone who actually understands the mechanics of kerberos, can explain TCP/IP, and knows the difference between TCP and UDP) I'm more than a little out of my depth with this

Re: Moving webhost

If the domains are registered with I-web and not you (as Matt says) then I don't think you'd be able to transfer it as they are going to need confirmation from I-web...

Re: Moving webhost

Have you got a Nominet certificate for the doamin name. If you haven't, it probably means that i-web have regestered it in their own name.

Re: Moving webhost

A whois shows my name as the 'registrant', and TUCOWS as the 'registrar'.

i'm guessing that, on that basis, they should be able to accept my say so that it should be registered?

Re: Moving webhost

Thread from last month from someone trying to transfer a domain:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/25...solutions.html

--------------------------------

I've got a PDF of my domain certificate, with my name on it, although it's for 2004-2006, dunno why I don't have one from 2006-2008.

May have a printed certificate, buried in The Drawer of Crap somewhere.

For my domain(s), a whois doesn't show my address, as I opted out.

Just emailed hfw and got a answer from support in minutes stating:

yes, our migration department can do this for you actually, once you purhase your account with us you would only need to provide them with login information to WHM on your current host so they can log there and make backups of your accounts, transfer them to your account with us and restore them.
Ace :-)

Except as the server is down I canot move diddly.

It did show my address once upon a time, but as I'm not using the site for commercial purposes I was able to get them to make that information so that it wasn't publicly visible.

I can't remember ever getting a letter from Nominet, although I did once manage to sign onto their site and download the certificate. I can't do that now though as I can't remember my logon credentials, I have paid them the admin fee that they require to 're-establish' my identity with them, so we'll see what comes of that.

Re: Moving webhost

Ok, now that I have control over my own domain again.....

Before I move to Host For Web does anybody else have any more suggestions/recommendations?

Oh, and does anybody have a site on HFW's servers that I can take a look at, just to check the response times etc?

Thanks.

www.nthwclan.co.uk is hosted on HFW. If you want I suppose I can upload a file for you to check continuous speed. Be aware though they are American, so don't expect UK-sized ping times. I just pinged the server and got 120ms which is actually very good for an east-coast server, let alone for a Chicago-based ISP.

No need mate, just wanted to see how quickly it came up etc.

Shame about the banner ad at the bottom though:

"Need top quality hosting for your clan?

Cheap, reliable, and trustworthy?

With amazing support, and 99% uptime?

Then you need.....

.....I-WEB SOLUTIONS
"

Oh how I laughed

Re: Moving webhost

Check the public part of a forum, as vBulletin does tend to stress shared web hosts (my last one kicked me off. Yes, you HostNine *spit*), so if the forum is fast, you're laughing.

Also you might want to check my edit in case you haven't already.
