Why is a bread van significant to the history of the Internet?
Simply put, a computer in the van sent a message to a computer lab in the University of California, some 400 miles away, and, in doing so, initiated the first Internet communication. The message, in an example of routing that would do even Virgin (who have been known to route connections through towns at opposite ends of the country) proud * travelled through several networks, and, indeed, travelled from San Francisco to Boston, then to Norway and Britain, then to Virginia and finally, via a small, nearby town, to UCal.

*Yes, I know about Internet routing, and I also know that, partially due to it's military roots, communications through the Internet rarely take a direct route. I also know that the route was probably chosen to test how international connections would handle internet comms.

"This is an important announcement. This is flight 121 to Los Angeles. If your travel plans today do not include Los Angeles, now would be a perfect time to disembark.”
