Re: Torrents or Newsgroups
Newsgroups, They max out your line so on a 10mb connection you will get 1.2mb's downloads, you don't have to keep a ratio and can be done free on virgin media servers. Anonymous
Torrents, slow(depending on seeders) alot of the good sites getting shut down, some sites log IP addresses so its not safe for use users.
I personally use newsgroups, depending on what you want to download.

Re: Torrents or Newsgroups
Newsgroups all the way, no uploading required, always maxes you out.
Torrents are slow, you wont get fast torrents unless your on certain private sites, which require invites, which can be hard to come by.

Agreed, the only private site I know of that can compete with newsgroups in terms of speed is blackcats, which is closed completely 25k members and doros will never open again.

Re: Torrents or Newsgroups
I never did get on with torrents, ok I didn't try that hard, but I found the 'hit & miss' of finding the correct link a pain.
With newsgroups, however, using an usenet indexing service, like newzbin or merlin, I can find exactly what is available & queue the chosen file for download at the max speed my connection allows, with no need to risk sharing....
Each method of downloading has its advantages, & disadvantages, it is just a case of choosing which suits best

Used to use p2p like DC++ etc.... not now though, would never go back usenet all the way.

Lets see
Latest ep, in good quality (not those crappy 400mb xvids)
Average time to d/l through torrent about 1hr, maybe 2 (thats with a very well seeded torrent)
Or ngs, about 10mins.
I know which i like best

usenet posts usually do the 400MB version, first, then other versions often follow, your post seems to imply 'only' 400 MB Xvids are posted in newsgroups, which isn't the case

Depends which groups you keep an eye on.
those 400mb xvids look terrible.
Anyway my point is, id rather grab off usenet in 10mins rather than wait 2 hours on a torrent, thats with keeping a 1:1 ratio as set by tracker rules!

And that, imo is a big difference. As you're not uploading, you are not distributing the item you're downloading. Newsgroups are a bit safer as people tend to get done for uploading rather than downloading.
