Re: Torrents or Newsgroups
Why restrict yourself to one or the other ?
Why not have both.
I use a torrentflux varient which allows me via the web to key in search words into a list of things I am interested it...
Pluggins search RSS feeds every 10 minutes based on your search criteria and if successful downloads and starts torrent or news nzb files automatically.
No faffing around needed to search for torrents or scan newsgroups for stuff you need.

Re: Torrents or Newsgroups
OK, i went for http://www.hitnews.eu/ eventually, cost £4.69 + i installed grabbit and then found extremely difficult to search al the newsgroups, I have about 20 newsgroups that i have subscribed to and last night it took over 1 hour to refresh groups, I then subscribed to a search feature (Cannot remember name) that cost me £1.00 for 1 month. Downloads are coming in at max speed (4MB), but plenty of errors when unpacking. Still using Utorrent when Newsgroups do not work properly.
Cannot beleive the amount of illegal porn on newsgroups, are they not policed by anyone ?

You should use .NZB files to download what you want (think of it like a torrent file you get off a site), then open that file in your newsgroup reader. Check the age of the file or you will get errors.
Check these free .NZB sites out. http://www.nzbsrus.com/ http://nzbmatrix.com/
If you do get errors you might beable to repair or make new files using http://www.quickpar.org.uk/ assuming you downloaded.

I personally use newshosting.com which gives me unlimited newsgroup access for around £7 a month, which always gives me a full 20mbit connection. Other people favour Giganews, however this costs more.

Advantages
1. You don't share as it's just you and the newsgroup provider you're connected to.
2. Far faster
3. More secure, currently less chance of getting into trouble if you're naughty!
4. You can repair or make new files if they are missing without having to go and search for another source.
Disadvantages
1. It usually isn't free

Thanks for the info mate I will have a look; I suppose it is worth it if you are on a connection like yours but I am only on a 2MB connection and usually max out my speed but I am sick of uploading all the time to balance the ratio out and on 2MB it takes a long time to get to 1:1 ratio again.

Re: Torrents or Newsgroups
On private trackers you have to upload or they ban you if your ratio is rubbish.
I was reading up on newsgroups and I am a bit confused, once I sign up are they just like torrents that there is a list and you pick what you want to download or do you have to search around for stuff; I mainly download TV episodes.

The way i use newsgroups is to go to a site like http://www.nzbsrus.com/ and download an NZB and then load it into your newsreader which you would have logged into your newsgroup host using your login and password. You can then download it all assuming the file isn't to old, then use quickpar to check and/or repair the files and finely unrar them like you normally do.
You might find http://www.indeklit.nl/ useful for finding free NZB sites.

In my opinion, the best way to cope with this is to sign up with a newsgroup indexing service e.g Newzbin ( costs 25 pence a week ) or Merlins Portal which is free but asks for donations.
Both have pretty good 'grouping' of the available files, so if you only want TV programs, then you only need to list the relevant files available in that category. Newzbin has an agent that will email you when a particular program is posted, as well - not sure about Merlin.
What you get, then, is an 'nzb' file, which is a kind of script which includes links to all the relevant posts comprising the file you want (Newsgroup posts are always 'multipart', usually *.rar encoded - using nzb files usually downloads the relevant *.par files, as well, which can often repair missing blocks in the *.rar files).
To make that work you will need a newsgroup client, I use Grabit, which is free, a subscription to a newsgroup server, I use Giganews, which is brilliant but comparatively pricey, and a program which can cope with *.rar files - WinRar being the most obvious, but not always available free. It is also handy to get ''Quickpar', which is free, and handles the repair of any missing bits in the *.rar files.
So, you search for 'heroes' in the index program, download the appropriate nzb, import that into Grabit to download the files, run Quickpar to check for & repair errors in the downloaded files & then run Winrar to extract them.
It sounds complicated, but is actually quite quick & easy once you have done it a couple of times....
<edit> I obviously type slower than Snoopz
