Art sites and resources.

I know there are quite a few artists here..and I'm sure we all have web sites that we find useful in our art work..

I thought a thread where we can share free resources might be helpful.

Here is my contribution

http://www.fontplay.com/freephotos/index.htm

http://www.sxc.hu/index.phtml

And for images of beautiful old walls, floors and tiles.

http://www.psicosonic.net/?zona=01do...cbd1023fb#zona

and finally a really beautiful site where you can research old masters and see some really beautiful art work, whilst possibly finding a terrific desktop image.

Great idea. I have had a quick look at the sites you have given and psicosonis.net has already sparked an idea for a canvas. I will definitely spend some more time browsing your recommendations.

To see what other artists are producing I like to keep an eye on the Saatchi Gallery .. Showdown.

I also enjoy the paintings of Walter Gabrielson and his canvases have triggered ideas for my own work.

At the moment I am working with gold leaf on canvas and have had to develop my own techniques as this work has traditionally been done on wood, vellum or plaster. One of the main dealers/manufactures in gold leaf is only a few miles away from where I live and they have been very helpful when I needed technical advise. I can also recommend them as an on line supplier.

Note books and early 20th century reference books left to me by a Great Uncle, who was a sign writer par excellence, have been have been a great help. Some of the recipes are quite scary though.....Take 12ozs of white lead, 1oz whiting and mix with rabbit skin glue to form a paste smooth to the touch.

The type of reference material I find useful is scattered all over the net but here’s one example.

As you say, fascinating. I really admire anyone who can master a computer programme and produce this type of art work. The examples I have seen of your work using these programmes are really great.

Although I have never spent any length of time experimenting with art software I have have attempted the odd piece of work and the results were pitiful.

Maybe I would have had more success and enjoyment if I had used something other than basic paint programmes but in all honesty I enjoy the process sketching out an idea on paper or using real paint on canvas.

An area that I am currently researching is Japanese woodblock prints. I love doing pen and ink drawings and am thinking of introducing gold leaf into my next series.
