TinyURL
Hey people,
I am thinking of using this tinyURL, as I am trying to save money right now.
I have a longish URL that I want shortened, its for my CV to direct people to my portfolio page so it is easier to type in.
my question is:
does tinyURL have a life span for that tinyURL or does it remain there for good?

it is to put on my cv instead of a long URL.
so that potential employers dont have to type anything long, just a small URL

Re: TinyURL
I agree with jedi,
ik-web.co.uk is available and is £6.09 all in with 123 reg.
www.ik-web.co.uk/cv.doc is short enough.

Re: TinyURL
To answer the question, I have had the same tinyurl for one of my gallery websites for the past 2yrs.
I don't know if it goes on how long it's been since a viewing but I access mine once a month.

I'd go along with the idea of getting your own domain name - it looks a bit more professional for a start.
I looked at getting mine once, but it's being used by some supermarket right now...one day I'll claim it from those damm cyber squatters!

and if you sent it to me as an employer websense would stop me looking at the link.
Just a thought.

If he wanted to put something offencive he could just as easily do it with a redirect from his own domain. Perhaps I'm missing something?

agree - not just the short term, but ik can learn to use the extra stuff you get with a hosted domain very quickly ....

Where I work, the TinyURL is blocked too.

Websense works on knowing what is on a domain and whether that domain should be filtered according to content.
As tinyurl could point to any domain and then the content at that domain could be anything it is blocked.
Say you want access to hotmail.com but that is blocked as web based email. You could create a tinyurl to hotmail.com and regain your access to hotmail, circumventing the control.
http://www.websense.com/global/en/Pr...nseEnterprise/
Now yes if you own your own domain you can do all sorts of things on it, you could set up your own private url / page forwarding service to again get access to hotmail, but I imagine if you have the nouse to do that you also have the nouse to realise you are circumventing a control your employer has put in place for a reason.

Re: TinyURL
I bought my first domain name about 7 years ago. I chose it and as I own the domain name I can choose anything I want at the start. I also have web space as I own a website and run a few others.
What I've done is to configure my domain name to forward any emails sent to it to the inbox supplied which my ISP. I then configured Outlook to read my inbox as normal but changed the "sender" info to reflect the email address with my domain name. This way my emails are being received and stored safely with my ISP and I get to use Outlook (Outlook Express and other email clients can be configured the same way)
Now if I change ISP all I have to do is change the email forwarder with my domain to my new ISP and all my emails automatically forward. I don't have to tell anyone a new email and all the other hassle that comes with changing email. It also has the added bonus that no-one knows who my ISP is unless I want them to know.
I've got an account with Hotmail that I use to register with forums to prevent spam getting to my main inbox. All friends and family are told when they receive my private email that it is never to be entered into websites under any circumstances.
Result? No spam.
So here it is in a nutshell...
1. Rent a domain name (123-reg is great for forwarders - unlimited!)
2. Add a forwarder to send emails to your ISP email address
3. Configure Outlook/Outlook Express to send emails under your domain email address
Done.

Why step 2? I'd much rather use my own hosting with dreamhost than trust Virgin with it.
