Hotmail and proxy servers

My ISP is Virgin Media and they are currently turning off their proxy servers and asking customers to connect directly to the internet rather than through a specific proxy. Fair enough, I just make the relevant adjustments in IE6 and Firefox and sites that used to be somewhat problematical, eg You Tube and iTunes, are now behaving themselves, great! But there's a problem.

Unless I specify a proxy server in IE6, Hotmail does not work properly. Mail that I have read stays marked as unread and the trash can does not empty properly. I have asked Hotmail why this happens and their responses, no doubt from a bot, have been useless.

As a temporary measure I am allowing Firefox to connect directly to the web and have put IE6 back on the proxy but there has to be a better way to do this. At present if I want to look at my e mails I have to turn the proxy ON, if I want to download some music from iTunes I have to turn it OFF.

Can anyone give me any ideas as how to fix this? Please don't say "get another e mail provider", I like Hotmail, I've used it for years and I want to stick with it if at all possible.

Thanks in advance

I don't understand your answer.

If I allow IE6 to connect directly to the internet my e mails appear as unread even if I have read them. They also show as unread mails in MSN Messenger, If I put them in the trash can and click on "empty" they are still there.

Only specifying a proxy server in LAN settings makes it work properly. However the proxy servers are being turned off now and specifying one certainly causes problems when accessing certain sites, such as the two I mentioned earlier, no doubt because proxies are on their way out.

How am I not allowing it to connect? It's simply a matter of put a tick in the proxy server box in LAN settings then Hotmail works but some other sites don't. Remove the tick, those sites work, but Hotmail doesn't. A simple but annoying problem.

If I'm being dim then I'm sorry. If your answer was somehow being sarcastic, then it doesn't seem to have been very funny does it?!
