Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

It's about time the Uk went forward with speeds as for what we pay, I think we could get a much better service.

There was a thread about other countries being ahead of the Uk a few weeks back here:

Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

I wonder if they throttle

Seriously: This is a demo of what comcast sees as being available in a few years. Not the reality in the US today.

Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

Yeah, because its just like ntl's peering will support those speeds (judging from current conditions).

Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

The above is a real, its for this years end, I know others countries are faster but thats because (1) they are smaller like .SWE or .NL so easier to upgrade Infrastructure or (2) .JAP where they were totally rebuilt after the war so modern Infrastructure, where as UK is running trains and cables in sewers built by the Victorians, so if the USA can dig deep as they have a big Infrastructure rework so can we, instead of our ISP sponsering too many footballs teams, buying into QVC and paying some hoe $36Million for a few adverts.

Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

Cox Communications in the US are charging
12 Meg down - 1 Meg up = $119 month
15 Meg down - 2 Meg up = $329 month

Just hope RB doesn't notice on his next trip over there.

Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

I know lots of USA users from IRC and they dont pay crazy prices for their broadband all over, some may some may not, but in Asia they pay peanuts for 50-100meg to there homes, I hear some even got 1000meg but not sure if true.

try verizon instead, Up to 15 Mbps/2 Mbps $49.99
they have 30mbps for $190 a month bit pricey i think lol

but quite a few others offer 10mb + for the $40-$50 mark, quite a bit less than what you pay here, lets hope he does notice

Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

I'm getting 15/2 for $30 a month. I could make that 30/5 for $40 a month. Apparantly shaped and throttled but not that I have noticed. You will see my speed tests done at 7.30pm on another thread my real life measurements to one of the speed test sites show 12/1.7 through my router.

The US can upgrade infrastructure quicker as much is on poles not in trenches. They are even stringing fiber on poles, interesting to see how easy that is to repair if a windstorm knocks it out.

Re: Comcast shows off 150Mbps cable

theres 2 problems here, one is that the Tier 1 providers charge more for uplinks in the uk, thats just a fact, that in turn means that the ISP's instantly have higher overheads, which means that the prices are higher.

Theres also an aspect of quality, 1 person i know in the USA, thinks i pay too much for my connection, untill he found out that it rarely goes down (so far since Feb, not one outage that i am aware of) where as, he has 2-3 outages aday. He found that he could get a SLA so that he gets less outages, but he then ends up paying more than me.

In the UK, we expect things to work and work well, and as such we pay the premium.

As it has nothing to do with VM, I've moved it into the Internet Discussion forum.
