Torrents are a form of peer-to-peer. So same rules apply. Some torrents are legal, some aren't. Some can still contain viruses. You'd configure your router in the same way, i.e. you set a port to use in your BitTorrent program and then set that to port to open and forward to the machine that has thas the program running.

A basic summary is that to start downloading you need to download a small .torrent file. Once you have that you can start downloading, providing there are people online who have the file to share.
Its OK to discuss BitTorrent as a theory here. What we won't allow is linking to illegal torrent files/sites. Many sites do use BitTorrent to distribute their legally-owned content legally.
