Web 2.0 wave starts to take hold

It seems that most software in the future will now be web based instead of being on your hard drive.

Click the "Watch now" button to see the programme, it's quite interesting

Be interesting to see if this happens now. Companies have been talking about web based software since about 1998, and it's been "The Next Big Thing" at least twice.

It appears to be the well forward according to this blog, especially in the business sector, but the bone of contention as always is security.

I suppose it will happen eventually.

I can't say if I am in favour of it though...

Yay, so you will NEED an internet connection to be able to use programs... Clever. Not.

Although i guess local apps will never die out. So it's not all that bad.

Re: Web 2.0 wave starts to take hold

I've been focusing a lot on this 'so called' web 2.0 drive.

The enterprise web 2.0 linky that was posted earlier does a quick summary but in reality it's the same old technology rebranded.

AJAX or asynchronous javascript is technically 'childs play' and in reality is a simple HTTP call - I would really like to see web apps allow call backs that would really rock and not this AJAX crap.

Sites I am currently interested in are :

www.twitter.com and the mashups that have spawned from it :
http://twittervision.com/

http://pipes.yahoo.com/

http://labs.d********/swarm/ EDIT is digg banned ?

Its all about social networks and networking. Lot of lonely people in developed countries with the trend set for them to become more and more lonely. Hence with more and more people contributing it's only a matter of time till we get decent mashups of common people/body movement on the internet.

I was working on an application a couple of weeks back to correlate broadcasts (tweets or blogs) with a key/tag search that would enable you to make friends or follow people/blogs who have similar interests as you.

Unfortunately I'm a little small and don't have enough computing power to keep up with the million or so database row inserts per day that I am doing. Anyway I'll keep recording and one day release a search engine.

Social computing is the future - technology remains the same but the brand changes to make money - I think they puck it up again like the .bomb era afterwhich finally we'll get web 3.0 which I hope will turn the internet into just a series of streams (RSS and better) and web pages that are just blank canvases for you to drag and drop your widgets on and go.

Sounds a little too bland for the businesses these days as the only thing that pays on the internet is porn and advertising and so alas the scraping of my vision of web 3.0

Re: Web 2.0 wave starts to take hold

It seems to me that, at the moment, Web 2.0 is a series of technologies that people are currently furiously trying to find a profitable use for.

I am not knocking it at all. I've used blogs a fair bit, and think that they can geniunely be useful.

I have to admit, I fail to see how online word processors and spreadsheets are useful for the average person. In fact, I am slightly suspicious as to why Google are willing to spend a lot of money to provide us something "free". Especially when they claim (as in the bbc article above) they aren't doing it to get people to see their ads.

Exactly. Ok, so it's free, but so is OpenOffice, & you don't need a net connection to use it if it's already installed.

The idea of these internet-dependant apps really bugs me. What happens when someone becomes dependant on 1 or more of these apps for daily/regular tasks & then their internet connection fails? They're up Creek without a paddle, that's what.

I asked about this last night.

It wasn't actually "digg", but "igg" (we were spammed with it a lot a while back apparently).

Now fixed.

Re: Web 2.0 wave starts to take hold

Interesting opinions. I am afraid that I am firmly in the other camp. I am a real big fan of Web 2.0. My reasons for this are
  • In the case of documents. I have real issue at work with sharing docs, versions of docs etc. The idea that you can allow certain people read access and certain people write access to an evolving document is great. I am fed up with MS as the track changes invariably goes wrong for me, and people are always using out of date versions of documents. With spreadsheets so many people use them as an alternative to databases, but you can't have more than one person in them at a time. Presentations are next, and that really lends itself to online collaboration.
  • Email - I now use my Gmail for all my email accounts and the UI is so simple and intuitive. I rarely find a feature I actually use missing. I can easily access my email at work, at home and on my mobile.
  • Other Apps - Remember the Milk, Google Notepad, Google Reader, Personalised homepage - all great.

Re: Web 2.0 wave starts to take hold

Personally i think the next thing will be taking the apps that are been developed on the internet, and dropping them into intranets.

With some setup one company could have clients around the world working on the same docments, less diskspace would be needed, easyer updates. Think about it, no more getting the IT staff to work all night upgrading system, change the site, and instantly its accross the bord.

desktop based applications have had their chance, but i really think companies will be soon using their intranets far more than they are currently.

Re: Web 2.0 wave starts to take hold

There may be no more getting the IT staff to work all night upgrading the system, but they will be working all night trying to secure it against hackers.

Re: Web 2.0 wave starts to take hold

That one is pretty simple to solve... they have the networks in place anyway, that store the files, and transfer the data, so they have to do that anyway.

Many of the large companies are starting to build their own networks from what i have heard from some friends.
