Re: BT news groups

Found the following site (via gogle)

http://www.btofaq.net/articles/newsgroups.html
Quote:
Newsgroups
  1. What is the name of the BT Openworld news server?
    news.btinternet.com
  2. What newsgroups exist relating to the BT Openworld service?
  3. How long do messages stay on the server?
Officially, 3 days for binary groups, 14 days for btopenworld.* groups, and 7 days for everything else. In practice, this is somewhat messed up since the migration to new news servers. Some groups, such as the btopenworld.broadband.* ones seem to have a retention time of months, whereas groups carrying binary attachments often have a retention time of less that 24 hours.
  4. Do BT carry a "full" newsfeed?
    No.
  5. What groups are not carried?
    • Newsgroups where the newsgroup title suggests that it carries illegal material. e.g. warez
    • Newsgroups which appear not to have completed the proper creation process
    • Newsgroups where a hierarchy imposes unacceptable rules on the ISP e.g. free.uk.*
  6. What about adult material?
The news server for BT Openworld used to carry groups which may have contained adult material, but the groups concerned were hidden from view. As a result, you had to know the exact name of the group in order to be able to access it. As of Jan 2001, this policy changed. The new policy is unclear at present, but implies that BT are reluctant to carry some adult groups, and that most of the ones which were hidden (I have no details on what they were!) will be dropped.
  7. Apart from the above, do BT impose any censorship on postings?
Only on the btinternet.* and btopenworld.* groups, where offensive content e.g. swearing is not permitted. Note that BT Openworld would still expect their overall Terms & Conditions to be met. For example, any illegal activity would not be tolerated. Charters for the btopenworld.* groups have been proposed, and are under consideration. A sample charter can be found here!
  8. Is there any alternative to the BT openworld news server that is available for me to use?
There are many news servers available. Availability of free news servers tends to vary, so if you use these, expect to have to change from time to time. To find listings of these, type "public news servers" into your favourite Internet search engine.
  9. Can I get a higher quality newsfeed if I am prepared to pay?
Yes, and the one that is recommended often in the newsgroups is Claranews
