WHOIS data
Morning,
Just a simple question! If you own a domain and your WHOIS data is now incorrect - is it possible to change it? My ISP says it can't be done - I think thats utter rubbish and it can be done!

Re: WHOIS data
Just to confirm... Yes it can be changed*, but to do it you need to contact your domain name registrar (for the site in your sig, that's tucows.com), not your ISP.
* Actually its illegal not to. Its a criminal offence to have inaccurate information contained in there (exemptions for information proxies, like GoDaddy do). ICANN require registrars to contact users every so often to remind them to check and update their details.

Re: WHOIS data
I'm with 1&1 and if I go to my control panel there, I can change my details and then it gets updated on the WHOIS system.

Re: WHOIS data
I'm with Dreamhost, and they allow you to use their details but with your own email address, for privacy reasons... or to update them as you so wish. They also offer flippin' great hosting deals with free domain name registration included

Re: WHOIS data
On my personal .co.uk accounts I have chosen to withold my address from whois searches. Unfortunately, I can't do this with .com, .org, .biz, .net etc.
I'm really not happy about having my address visible to everyone. I don't want to break the law, but is there anyway I can stop my address from being visible on whois searches? This would be for privacy/spam protection purposes only. Is it legal to put a c/o my isp for example? Or are there any companies out there who will let me use their address for whois purposes (in exchange for a small fee)?
Ali.

Re: WHOIS data
Do you know you've bumped a thread that's nearly 18 months old? :-)
At lease you use the search facility - good boy / girl!!
Have you contacted your provider and asked them?

Re: WHOIS data
Thanks for your reply.
After some research into this, I've signed up with http://domainsbyproxy.com/
Good price, and it does what it says on the label.

Re: WHOIS data
If you dont want your address on the whois for a .uk domain you can use the whois opt out, providing its not a business domain.
Any registra, should be able to do this via PGP

Re: WHOIS data
Yes, Nominet, the official registrar for .uk domains, allows this facility for individuals. Unfortunately, other domain registrars do not. So if you have a .com, .net or whatever, your details are always visible on whois searches.
Companies such as http://domainsbyproxy.com/ allow you to withhold your details from whois searches. I run a webforum with a .com name and in the past I've even had to get a restraining order out on a member I banned (it's a mental health forum). A private registration ensures my privacy and safety - something I value highly.

some registrars will offer a forwarding service although there's usually an extra charge for it.
