What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
I wanted to do this since I'm going to change eventually, I want people's opions on the "type" of internet connection they want or prefer
I want Satelite really, easy to use, can be used any where in the UK, even some times abroad. What does every one else think?

Satellite has joyously high pings. No thanks.
I have cable and don't want anything else. 10Mb/1Mb for less than 30 pounds a month. Great pings, great capacity, love it.
DSL can just go and suck on a lemon.

with respect , the uk cannot offer anywhere near that sort of capacity and most likely never will offer it , at least not for a long long time

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
I don't care about high-pings with satelite, I don't play games. I only use my computer for chatting, speaking to people and listening to a low bandwidth music stream. And by the way, you can get satelite as 500k to 1mb now.

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
T1 is an old style dedicated leased cable line connection.
Its ~1.5Mbit synchronus (same up as down).
It is also 1:1 contention and comes with guarantied uptimes and stuff usually.
Costs an arm and both legs. and has very limited avaliability in this country. Especially since its been replaced by T3 (3x the speed) but again thats rediculous pricing for anything but medium -> large businesses.
Personally my halls connection last year was excellent but that aint gonna happen retail. I'd like high speed sdsl but cost is the main thing. We've just downgraded to 1mbit adsl from 2mbit because it was just two expensive between the 3 of us (there was 4 before)
K
Edit - this site gives lots and lots about the original t1 standard, needless to say its 1.544mbit, http://www.dcbnet.com/notes/9611t1.html
Oh btw i'd really like an oc connection, oc3 would do, oc48 would be nice and oc192 i wouldnt know what to do with it.
Most OC connections are limited to isp's and internet backbone stuff. It would be cheaper for move to central london than the installation charge by far !

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
A Tx line is a trunk line. A T1 has 24 regular 64-kbit lines bundled together. That is a 24 regular phone lines.
64k * 24 = 1.544 Mbps
I doubt you guys have Tx lines though. Most likely you have a Ex line. A E1 is 32 phone lines, which is about 2.048 Mbps.
EDIT: No, a T3 is 28 times faster than a T1. About 44 Mbps. A T3 can carry 24*28=672 phone calls at once.

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
I'm perfectly happy with my 2mbps ADSL line (Bulldog prime-time) and at £29.99 a month its great value.
Cable (Ntl) can go suck on a lemon (at £34.99 a month for 1mbps)

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
i would be happy to have a 5mbit connection for £65 per month, download that is, upload 300-500k, no limits to bandwidth, no limits whatsoever, although if it mean no speed upgrades for 2 years i would still go for it, and expect the price to come down overtime.
cable or DSL, cable being preferential.

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
ideally i would like to have my 100mbps uni connection permanently. this was free, incidentally and totally uncapped
as it happens, at the moment i am on dial up and when i move back to birmingham i will be on telewest 768k. i would like to see south-korea style broadband over here, but i dont think it will happen for a long time

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
Interesting your not interested in ping rates when you opt for a satelite connection.. but you say you want to be able to chat..
If my memory serves me correctly, without a huge dish you have to use a standark 56k modem for the uplink..... would make talking using skype etc.. very difficult as the round pi9ng times would cause momenteous lags... I just wish i could get 8mbit synchronus cable connection.. id shut moaning then lol

Re: What type of internet connection do you want, or prefer?
All the schools in the local area share a 34mb connection and my school feeds to some of the other ones so we get a bigger connection but all the schools are on a fibre conenction back to the main server. NTL actually put in the fibre to all the places. Some schools are on ISDN still but I get the advantage of having a decent connection.
