yes the word email is being banned in france

they will now call it 'courriel'

the ministrys general commision on terminology and neology insists web surfers in france term 'email' as 'courrier electronique'

Bloody Hell they can't leave anything alone can they? 'courrier electronique' doesn't roll off the tongue like the word email, even for the french.

Heard that years ago, back when they banned black london cabs and a bunch of words from the english language that originally came from french anyway

What's crazy about it is it perpetuates the fantasy that each culture lives in some kind of isolation, taking on board only those influences it chooses. There are a vast number of words in English that came here from French, Spanish, German, Latin, even Arabic, but you don't see parliament passing laws against them.

The French are paranoid that their culture is going to be subsumed by Anglo-Saxon culture (i.e. English-speaking). This is sad because it demonstrates a basic lack of faith in their own culture. And if they don't believe in it, what's the point of passing laws to try to protect it?

It doesn't demonstrate a lack of confidence in thier own culture and language, it shows that they have a pride in it and are taking positive steps to prevent the erosion of thier language. Better than becoming America's lap dog like Britain.

If the French are proud of their language, it will remain protected without legal protection, surely?

And does acceptance of the internationaly-understood term 'email' represent erosion of the language anyway?

That site just furthers the case for the french wanting to disassociate themselves from a country whose new terminology has brought us friendly fire

Anyway.... Vive La France! and it's attempts at independence... they've been saying non for years.... this new non shouldn't be a surpize to any of you.... we have kilos to deal with in this country and no one has died of it yet....
