large file transfer
I have a 350mb file that i need to transfer to a friend... msn messenger is only letting my upload about 3.5kB/sec which is ridiculous, seeing as my upload is 256kbps. The file is far too big for any webspace that i have.
anyone got any good ideas how i can transfer this? setting up a VPN is far too much effort, but there are routers involved at one end, and it is only for the 1 file!

Re: large file transfer
You could try a different messaging service. Not tried that many, but ICQ has file transfer functionality as well and the speed on that has never been a problem when I have used it.
I suppose one other option would be to use something like HJSplit to chop the file up into segments that you can fit on to your webspace and let your friend get the file a bit at a time, but that is going to be a somewhat cumbersome solution.

Re: large file transfer
I don't know for sure, but can any P2P software be configured so it will only work to specific IP addresses, thus keeping the shared file private?

I was going to suggest that you could use winrar & pack it into smaller transferable files then all your friend has to do is un-rar (un-pack) the rar'd files winrar will unpack the smaller files into one big file again.
Winrar website link

Re: large file transfer
one of you should set up a private hub in DC++. it makes file transfers very easy sometimes when msn is being gitty....

You can split rar it into smaller files (each file would be smaller than 350mb) & when the person at the other end un-rars the smaller rar'd files it will unpack back into one big file again.
Another method of transfering files is by using Mirc you can send the files too him/her as long as your friend is in the same channel as yourself.

Re: large file transfer
DrAwesome has the best answer by far if you're unable to do the file transfer via a CD.

Re: large file transfer
Sounds silly but have you considered sending it via hyperterminal... Its not the fastest but it will get there !

Just run hyperterminal on both computers. Set one to " wait for incoming call " and tell the other one to connect to the first computers ip... Thats about it... When you are connected you will be able to type messages to each other. Now go to tools and select send file. Browse to file to send and hit send...

Cheers
