When I was younger I knew an idiot who actually did something similar to the bloke in the article linked to, except in this instance the idiot in question had stolen the ring from somebody & had placed it there to hide it.

This is not that unusual, I have attended at least 3 incidents of this and firefighters are called because they have access to a ring cutter, normally used to cut rings off swollen fingers after burns or trapped in machinery.
