The four-stroke piston engine
So I was helping out with ground school class today (for flying), and I was most amused at the little memory thingy the instructor came up with to remember the four strokes of a piston engine.
Suck, squeeze, ***, and go.
"Of course," he said, "don't use those terms on the exam. They are not very technically correct."
(suck being intake, squeeze being compression, *** being power, and go being exaust)

of course the school I went to was only concerned with questioning the drivers affidavit - not how the car worked!

good job it wasn't a 2 stroke engine being discussed - that does suck & squeeze first then bang & blow

lol not often we find you lost for words
It was just my dad used to have a 2 stroke car, a DKW made by Auto Union & what I stated above was pretty much how he described the way it worked. Course I was young & innocent then & didn't read anything into it
The advantage of a 2-stroke is theoretically more power for a given engine capacity, but a 4-stroke engine is less prone to wear and causes less pollution as it doesn't need oil in the fuel mixture. (totally transparent attempt to stay on topic:p)

Well.... even i can see the reason for that.... of course a 4-stroke engine doesn't need oil in the fuel mixture.... a 4-stroke is always going to be better lubricated than a 2-stroke :p
Gaz..... i didn't say i was lost for words.... i know exactly where they are..... i was just hoping they would stay there
Now stop goading me..... or i'll have to report you

I'll be good, nice to see you back on form after your bout of Bronchitis
- I'm just glad the thread isn't discussing rotary engines - I could have got in serious trouble.
