I thought people said "bless you" when you sneezed as sneezing was one of the signs of the plague and it was said in hope that it wasn't what caused you to sneeze?

but perhaps that particular gem was taken from an american source and their originating story is different to the european one?

For certain values of "strongest". Eg the one that can actually do the most work for longest is the heart.

But once you loose consciousness your bodies natural reflex will again take over, as you can not control the "must breathe" reflex once unconscious.

Thats what I was always lead to believe.
