Re: How many rights did u say ?

We have one in Hemel Hempstead too, locally known as 'the Magic Roundabout' but officially something bland I can't remember ... scared the pants off me first time I approached it and saw a road sign very like that one.

I've been to the one in Hemel... it was late at night and no traffic around, so just a case of put foot down... hope i end up in the right place on the other side!

When we have visitors for the weekend, I make a point of driving round it anticlockwise, it never fails to freak them out

Thumbs up Re: How many rights did u say ?

HEHE! It's great

You can always tell when you are behind someone who has never been across the Magic Roundabout (yes that's it offical name, it's just like the road sign in the image!)

If you know what you're doing when it's busy, you can take a different route across, and miss lots of traffic.

I've also been to the one in Hemel, and it's a bit different, it's not all open like the one here in Swindon.

Not sure if it's to keep visitors out or in!!!!

Bit more info about it here: http://www.swindonweb.com/life/lifemagi0.htm

I used to live near Swindon, that magic roundabout is bloody awful. All I used to do was see the exit I wanted and GO!

Re: How many rights did u say ?

I think I've been driven around the one in hemel hempstead when I was on the way to Uxbridge.
If I was a driver and approached anything like that I'd have a panic attack and totally freak out

I'm guessing it's a hotspot for accidents?

Not that I'm aware of, strangely. At least, I only recall seeing one bent car there in the five years I've lived here. It just .... works, somehow. Probably because it's unfamiliar enough to engender caution in most people and busy enough to prevent anyone approaching it at too high a speed.

From the link posted by Mikeyb:

Quote:
Though there have been 14 serious accidents and 59 lesser ones recorded in 25 years, that rate is less than one would expect for such a busy junction. Most accidents have involved cyclists and motorcyclists and now a cycle lane running right round the outside of the roundabout, with pelican crossings, should ensure that the Magic Roundabout becomes as safe as it is efficient.

Re: How many rights did u say ?

I can remember back in the 70's we used to go to swindon most weekends and the roundabout wasn't in it's present day form.......at first they used a load of tyres. Like most of you say, it was a case of knowing where you wanted to go, and taking the direct root
