Tim Minchin Fumes Over Song Cut From Jonathan Ross Show
Quote:
Comedian Tim Minchin has lashed out at ITV after his performance was cut from Jonathan Ross's Christmas special.
Writing on his website, Minchin said he had been asked to compose a song for the show and wrote a "silly, harmless" lyric comparing Jesus to Woody Allen.

The video itself is here.
Fairly tame stuff, seems this chap took exception and cut it to cover his rear end having had it kicked in the past.

It's not the worst thing he's done (he's your typical atheist religion-bashing-for-no-reason type) but I'm sure it's brought him plenty of welcome publicity.

I liked his Royal Variety show performance. I don't much about him or seen any of his stuff so will check him / his shows out.

No it wasn't offensive at all, however: I don't blame the producer for his decision as it clearly wasn't worth the inevitable outpouring of whingeing by the moral police.

I hate it when the moral police win
There was absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Not what i'd consider offensive, or particularly funny either. Looks like the authorities are becoming more and more restrictive of free speech though which is worrying. Half the comedians from the 70s would have gone the same way today and they never offended more than a few people like Mary Whitehouse back then.

It's wasn't the producer. It was the 'Director for Television' at ITV, the aforementioned Peter Fincham. It had already been cleared by everyone at the show who had checked the lyrics before hand and obviously saw the performance. It's all rather sad.
I actually saw him perform this live during the Uncaged Monkeys show at the Hammersmith Apollo. It was very good and there was a funny line which had obviously already been cut by the producers of the show involving Sally Morgan.
It's a shame as it was a funny song and I don't think it was offensive. It may have been flippant.

He isn't actually known for being a militant atheist. He is a comedian/song-writer. His most famous songs aren't really about religion at all and he wrote the Matilda musical for which he received much acclaim. It's a gross mischaracterisation to portray him as a religion-bashing-for-no-reason-type.
I don't think it's 'welcome publicity'. In his blog on the matter he seems genuinely, and rightly, upset that he was commissioned to perform a song which was pulled from the show. All because " of the small minority of Brits who believe they have a right to go through life protected from anything that challenges them in any way".
He is getting the welcome publicity because that can happen when you censor someone. ITV are perfectly within their rights to do of course, but I disagree with their decision.

Re: Tim Minchin Fumes Over Song Cut From Jonathan Ross Show
I suppose it's a positive thing that they did this regarding a song connected to Christianity. Usually it's Islamic comedy material that gets vetoed so it's good they're showing some equality.

Re: Tim Minchin Fumes Over Song Cut From Jonathan Ross Show
No censorship of this kind is a positive thing. Far more positive would be stopping the special treatment of religious beliefs full stop.

It would seem the powers-that-be disagree with you.

Re: Tim Minchin Fumes Over Song Cut From Jonathan Ross Show
Peter Fincham is not a 'power-that-be(s)'. Censorship should be left to the law of the land, not one man's personal prejudice/fear of getting his hand slapped...

Re: Tim Minchin Fumes Over Song Cut From Jonathan Ross Show
He sounds like a "power-that-be" if it was his decision to can the song.
