LoveFilm, the Amazon-owned subscription movies service, has today hit back at impending competition from rival Netflix by signing a major new deal with Warner Bros.

The multi-year "pact" between LoveFilm and Warner Bros covers digital streaming, download-to-own and pay-per-view of movies such as The Dark Knight, The Hangover and Gran Torino.

LoveFilm will also get access to Warner Bros' branded subscription video on-demand service WarnerFilms, offering 24-hour rentals of up to 28 on-demand of films at any one time. The service, which launched on BT Vision in the UK in May 2010, adds seven new titles each week

Under the agreement, new Warner Bros films will also be made available to LoveFilm subscribers to stream on their PCs, PS3, iPad, connected TVs, Blu-ray players and, later this year, the Xbox 360

Getting very interesting for next year with Netflix ad LoveFilm inking content deals in the past couple of weeks.

Re: LoveFilm hits back at Netflix with Warner Bros deal

"The deal does not affect BSkyB's rights to show movies on its services, with Warner Bros saying that it has carved out a new "second pay-TV window" for the first time that will see LoveFilm get titles exclusively for its subscription streaming service."
As Netflix and Lovefilm go to war you can bet the other movie studios will also find a "second pay-TV window" to exploit which doesn't effect their current deal with SKY. Whilst things are getting interesting, at this stage it looks like SKY and their content deals will remain uneffected.
Whilst competition is good, there is a situation brewing where Netflix are going to have content deals with studios ABC whilst Lovefilm have content deals with studios XYZ. Whilst having choice is good, potential customers who want access to all online streaming movie content, without a SKY subscription will need to join both Lovefilm and Netflix.

And it will be interesting to what they will both charge per month as l am sure Sky will have several weapons up their sleeve in order to compete with them with their own Sky Movies bundle pricing.

So where do Virgin Media fit into this new world of streaming. After all their platform is arguably the best equipped, currentlym do do streaming stuff.

Thats a very good question and l suspect to see something happen in the early part of next year involving VM and these film streaming services.

Great news , hopefully more competition will result in better prices. In the short term I'll stick with Sky Movies until Lovefilm and Netflix can offer all their movies in high definition.
