Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
You read the headline right.
Starting in January (US release)
ST:TNG is coming to blu ray with all 178 episodes having a new 1080P transfer and 7.1 channel sound.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/s...y-starting-in/
The transfer is made possible by the fact that in the 90s, the Americans (unlike us) tended to shoot live footage for TV shows on 35mm film rather than video, and only transfer to video for editing and post production.
They are in the process of capturing the negatives in Hi Definition and are redoing the special effects. They are looking at releasing a disk with 3 of the most popular episodes in January and releasing season 1 later in the year. Presumably the other seasons will be released every few months.

Re: Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
If they have 35mm prints for all the original photography, does that mean the whole kit and caboodle will end up in delicious 16:9 as well?
Man, it's almost worth buying a Blu Ray player just to see that.

Re: Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
I heard about this a few weeks back and nearly posted in the DVDs/Blu Rays you lust after thread.
Can't actually wait, I will be getting the taster disc for sure. It will have Farpoint the Season 1 opener and also a couple of the most popular later episodes.

Re: Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
It will be interesting to see how well the special effects can be upscaled to the higher resolution. The general filming may well be OK, but even then if you new the viewing was only going to be in SD, one wonders if some of the sets will have sufficient detail to look good at the higher res.

Re: Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
They are re-mastering from the original 35mm stock used in principal photography. There will be no upscaling - the negatives will scan at 1080 just fine. The special effects are then being recreated in much the same way as they did with the original series a couple of years ago.

I thought they were also going back to the negatives for the model shots and recompositing?

Re: Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
The whole lot is being drawn from the original 35mm. When I say SFX I'm talking about transporter shimmer, phaser blasts etc.
Naturally, none of that is on the original negatives.

Re: Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
although wonder how much of that was 'CGI' and how much was optical work?

Re: Star Trek Next Gen Blu Ray.
ILM was responsible for the effects so I think they would have been optical at that point in history. The part of Lucasfilm that was developing CGI was eventually spun off and renamed Pixar but even when Lucas owned it I think it was a division separate from ILM.
