He basically appears to be saying that the BBC should follow practices that Manchester United no longer do....

Yes but the BBC have been challenged with massive cost cutting measures , the F1 deal proves it's the viewer who's suffering while executives and performers get paid exuberant amounts of money.

The article points out that Man Utd no longer do it, and why.

The point the article makes is that there is a lack of other potential employers willing(or able) to pay to the sort of money they currently earn at the BBC. Whereas a good football player has other potential bidders for his talents.
